Auburn baseball entered the Alabama series over the weekend under cloudy skies with hopes of breaking out of an offensive slump that has seen the Tigers win only eight of their last 24 games. And boy did they bust out. After splitting the first two games of a three game series against Bama, Auburn won the rubber match Sunday blowing out the Tide 17-7 in Plainsman Park..
Coach Butch Thompson said on Thursday that, “The moments, whenever they happen, it can explode… We’re going to get one of those swings, and as soon as one of those swings comes when it matters, we can really build off that and ignite.”
“One of those swings” came Sunday afternoon when Brody Moore hit a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. It ignited a rally that produced 14 runs on 14 hits in the final three frames.
The Tigers tallied 19 total hits hits on the day and the 17 runs were a season high for Auburn. Everyone in the starting lineup had a hit and scored a run with Moore, Conor Davis, and Will Holland getting three a piece.
Despite a banged up pitching staff, Auburn (29-18, 12-12 SEC) finds itself in a good position with eight games remaining before the SEC Tournament. And five of those eight are at home (against UAB, Georgia and North Alabama) with the final series coming on the road in Baton Rouge.
The victory marked Auburn’s second consecutive series win against Alabama (27-21, 6-18 SEC) and its 15th home series win in the last 17 home series.
“We’re just continuing to see the character and the resilience of our guys,” said Thompson. “I’ll continue to embrace and appreciate that effort, and we’ll need it down the stretch.”
Infielder Will Holland said the Tigers, “played their heart out and just let the chips fall where they may. If we just keep doing what we’re doing and playing as a team, good things are ahead of us.”
And there’s room for that type of optimism as the sun definitely appears to be peeking through the clouds. With an RPI of 12, the Tigers are projected as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But the Tigers need to keep the momentum going. First pitch Tuesday will be at 6 p,m. on the the SEC Network.
