Auburn won an important basketball game in Athens Wednesday although the Tigers made it a little scary by allowing Georgia to close a 14-point gap before Atlanta native Chuma Okeke netted a 3 pointer with 24 seconds left to beat the Dogs in their house 78–75.
Okeke has been a consistent offensive weapon lately, scoring in double digits in the last 12 games and including four double-doubles. He made plays all over the court, finishing with 13 points and leading the Tigers with six rebounds. Point guard Jared Harper said, “It was a do or die game for us, a big win, and we all have confidence in Chuma. He’s a great player.”
Coach Pearl added, “This was a great win for our program. Not since 1979 have we won four straight against Georgia … We had to overcome a lot of adversity.”
With just three games left, the win gives Auburn a little breathing room in its quest to make the NCAA field. Auburn (19–9, 8–7) returns home Saturday to take on Mississippi State (21–7, 9–6). Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
