Auburn Women Beat Alabama for Third Time This Season to Advance in SEC Tournament

The Auburn women’s basketball team won a dramatic victory over arch rival Alabama Thursday night in the second round of the SEC Tournament. Down by seven points in the fourth quarter, the Tigers forced five turnovers to beat the Tide 53–52.

It was the third time this season the Tigers (22–8) beat Alabama (14–17). The last time Auburn accomplished that feat was 43 years ago—way back in 1975.  And the Tigers did it with an impressive display of forcing turnovers. Auburn got 29 points off 26 Alabama turnovers with 18 of them coming in the second half.

“As everybody knows, it’s hard to beat a team three times,” Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said …”It was definitely a tough game. I’m very proud of our young ladies. They continued to fight; [they] were relentless, kept getting after it.”

The Tigers broke the school record (181) for 3-point field goals in a season two and a half minutes into the second quarter. Freshman Robyn Benton made the record-breaking shot. Auburn now has 185 on the year.

However, good defense and great free throw shooting were the keys to the win. The Tigers hit 10-of-11 in the fourth quarter alone, including the game winning points by Daisa Alexander with 11 seconds to play.

Auburn moves on to play third-seeded Texas A&M Friday night in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. Game time will be approximately 7:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network. War Eagle and …
