4-Star 2020 QB target Robby Ashford plans to announce in March

Auburn’s hunt for a QB in the 2020 class could come to an end in March.

Auburn still has work to do to close out the 2019 class but the staff is doing and has been doing plenty of work on the 2020 class as well. A big domino is expected to fall later this spring. At the Under Armour Future 50 check in yesterday, 4* QB Robby Ashford told SBNation he expects to make his decision in March and currently has a top 3 of Auburn, Georgia and Penn State.

Ashford has been a guy Auburn has been after for some time now. He made a big splash in his debut as the Hoover Bucs’ starting QB this past fall when he threw for 383 yards and 4 TDs against Pinson Valley on ESPN. Against more talented defenses though he was a bit more up and down. The upside is there with Ashford but he might need some seasoning before being ready to lead an SEC offense.

He’s also a big time baseball prospect who is expected to play both at the next level. Butch Thompson could end up playing a key role in this recruitment moving forward especially since he told AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr he doesn’t have a ton of contact with the Georgia baseball staff currently.

“I really don’t communicate with the baseball staff (at Georgia),” Ashford said. “But the football coaches talk to them about me and they contact my baseball coach. They’re really on the come up. They had a good year last year, they’ve got a new coach and really young team. When I come in there, it’d be pretty much starting over with the young guys and I kind of like that.

For much of Ashford’s recruitment, Auburn has felt like the team to beat but that could be changing. The Dawgs have made a huge push and ironically it’s their depth chart that’s the big sell. With Justin Fields’s expected transfer, there’s a big opportunity to be the next guy after Jake Fromm. Meanwhile, Auburn is bringing in the top QB in the 2019 class in 4* Bo Nix while also having redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood and Cord Sandberg on the roster. Ashford says he’s not afraid of competition but the idea of seeing the field early for the Dawgs could prove hard to resist.

At this point in the last two recruiting cycles, the Tigers already had their QB of the class locked down. This go around, Auburn has had to spread a much wider net already offering 13 quarterbacks to date which dwarfs the number of the previous two cycles combined. Landing Ashford would be a big early win for this staff and would add an important piece to this 2020 class. Getting your QB on board early is a hugely important part of any recruiting cycle. The Tigers are hoping to accomplish that task in March.
