Safety Tray Matthews returns to NFL

The Indianapolis Colts have signed former Auburn standout Tray Matthews for their practice squad, the NFL team announced on Monday.

Each NFL team can have a 10-member group that practices with the team but cannot play in games. Only the 53 men on the active roster can play in games.

Matthews entered the NFL on April 30, when he signed with the Minnesota Vikings after going unselected in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Matthews went through Minnesota's offseason program, training camp and preseason before the Vikings waived the safety with an injury designation on Sept. 1, when the team reduced its 90-player preseason roster to the regular-season limit. Minnesota did not disclose Matthews' injury.

When Matthews cleared waivers, he reverted to Minnesota's injured reserve. The Vikings waived Matthews with an injury settlement on Sept. 11.

Matthews registered nine tackles in two preseason games with Minnesota.

In three seasons at Auburn, Matthews started 33 times in 36 games and led the Tigers in tackles in the 2016 season.
