In just the first week of the season, three FCS teams have wins over their FBS foes. Now, true, these wins were not against teams from a Power 5 conference, but Appalachian State took Penn St. to overtime before the Nittany Lions were able to survive.
These games just worry me. Why? Well, think back no further than September 2015 when Jacksonville State made a visit to the Plains. Auburn entered that game ranked #6 in the country, and the Gamecocks gave Auburn all it could handle and forced overtime before Auburn scored a touchdown and extra point to win 27–20. Jacksonville State, in fact, won in virtually every statistical category.
Auburn enters Saturday having moved up to #7 in both the AP and Coaches’ Polls, coming off an emotional “road” win over then #6 Washington. The outcome of that game may, and hopefully will, figure into the CFB Playoffs.
Alabama State enters Jordan- Hare Stadium off of a win over Tuskegee, and Hornets’ Coach Donald Hill-Eley says he has his team ready.
Coach Malzahn has stated he wants to use this week for Auburn “to get better.” This game should be over by halftime, and if so, CGM can then work on any and everything that the coaches wish to improve. But, first things first, go out and take care of business.
What do you think Gus and Co. have to do to prevent a letdown of astronomical proportions?
