Auburn Football Recruiting: Good News Coming Soon?

Auburn might be close to landing one of their top prospects

It’s been a quiet August after an explosive end to July when Auburn landed four commitments in five days. But that could be changing soon. One of Auburn’s top targets, 4* WR Matthew Hill, told reporters yesterday that he plans on announcing his commitment sometime this week. Based off what he told Benjamin Wolk of SECCountry, it sounds like that could be good news for Auburn.

One thing Hill said Wednesday that should keep the Auburn side relaxed, however: This decision isn’t a new one.

Hill said he’s had this feeling for a while now.

“It was probably about a month and a half or two months ago. Somewhere around that time,” Hill said. “Wherever I go, I want it to feel like home. And of course, playing time played a factor.”

The Tigers have long been considered the frontrunners for Hill. In fact, I am shocked he is not already on board but the talented GA native wanted to do his due diligence before pulling the trigger. Alabama and South Carolina are the Tigers top two challengers with the Gamecocks more than likely the biggest threat. However, unless something wild happens, always a possibility when it comes to recruiting, I expect Hill picks the Tigers this week. That would be a big time commitment for Auburn and a great way to head into the football season.

Dylan Wonnum Trending Towards Auburn

Hill’s impending commitment wasn’t the only good news to come out of the Corky Kell Luncheon. 4* OT Dylan Wonnum told reporters he’s got a new leader. Again, Wolk got the scoop:

With that said, one school has started to stand out for him, and his answer might surprise. Wonnum has long been considered a South Carolina lean, but as he planned to delay his decision, everyone else has started to move even with the big offensive tackle.

On Wednesday, however, Wonnum said one program has started to gain an advantage.

“I’m actually leaning toward Auburn,” Wonnum said. “Other than that, everything is going good. When I went there, something just stood out more than every other college in the SEC.”

Wonnum’s older brother plays defensive end for the Gamecocks and that’s why many thought the Tucker, GA native would eventually land there as well. However, it sounds like Herb Hand has been doing work on the recruiting trail.

The 2017 recruiting class was loaded with offensive tackle talent and it’s looking like the same could be said for 2019. The 2018 one, however, isn’t the deepest so if you can get one of the few big time players, you better get it done. Wonnum is one of those big time players. At 6’5” 279 lbs, Wonnum has the frame you love to see and he’s nasty in the trenches. Auburn wants at least one offensive tackle in this class and Wonnum would be a option for that spot. Wonnum’s teammate 4* LB Michael Harris is already committed to the Tigers and he’s close with AU commit 3* Jalil Irvin. This battle is far from over but it sounds like the Tigers have made a major move for the stud tackle.

Coynis Miller Has A Leader

It wasn’t all good news this week for Auburn. The Tigers top defensive tackle target, 4* Coynis Miller, has a leader and it’s neither instate team. Instead, Miller told AuburnUndercover that it was Florida who held the edge right now. Miller visited the Gators right before the start of the dead period and the visit played a big role in him deciding to push back his August commitment until after the season.

It’s not panic time just yet though for Auburn fans. It wasn’t all that long ago that Asa Martin had UF as his leader and now he’s basically picking between the two instate schools. I would not be surprised if that ended up the case here as well. Still, Jim McElwain is starting to get it done on the recruiting trail and the Gators will be a team to keep an eye on in Miller’s recruitment. I still have faith that Rodney Garner will get his man in the end.

Corky Kell Classic

Georgia High School football kicks off this weekend with a heck of an opening weekend. This is the second year of the Corky Kell Classic which hosts nine high school games over three days. What’s really cool is all the games will take place at Turner Field which has recently been converted to Georgia State’s new football stadium. The week will feature some big time matchups that AU fans might be interested in following. I believe all the games will be streamed at 11Alive.com. Here are a few games featuring some top Auburn targets.

Houston County vs Jones County | Thursday | 8:15 pm

Houston County High School will have one of the top prospects lining up on their offensive line this season in 4* OG Trey Hill. I personally believe Hill is the top guard prospect in the 2018 class. He’s also at the top of Herb Hand’s want list. Georgia has long thought to be the favorite but don’t sleep on Auburn or Florida State in this race. Hill has visited the Tigers more than any other team and a big season on the field could make things real interesting come February.

South Forsyth vs Roswell | Friday | 5:30 PM

Roswell is the two time GA 7A runner up. Last season, AU signee Malik Willis lead the Wolves to a championship showdown with powerhouse Grayson. This year, North Carolina transfer 3* Cordell Littlejohn will attempt to do the same with hopefully a better result. If Auburn misses on Justin Fields, I wouldn’t be shocked if Littlejohn’s name started to move up AU’s board. He’s a guy that I think is going to have a big fall and will land at a Power 5 school. There’s also 3* TE Tyneil Hopper who is one of the Tigers top tight end targets. I think he’s a perfect fit for what Chip Lindsey wants out of the tight end spot. I am not sure, however, where AU stands with Hopper but he’s a name to track this fall.

Kell vs Tucker | Saturday | 9:00 AM

Tucker is loaded with D1 talent this season. Auburn already landed one stud from the high school Tigers in 4* LB Michael Harris. They are hard after his teammate 4* OT Dylan Wonnum. However, while AU will have Harris in Wonnum’s ear trying to talk the top 100 player into being a Tiger at the next level too, another teammate, 4* WR Josh Vann, is looking like he will end up being a Gamecock. Muschamp’s squad appear to be Auburn’s top competition for the stud OT so there will an extra recruiter for both schools in Wonnum’s ear this fall. Also remember the name Derrick McClendon. The 2019 defensive end prospect already holds offers from fifteen schools and is expected to be one of the top players in a loaded 2019 class.

Archer vs Brookwood | Saturday | 11:45 AM

Hopefully by the time this game kicks off it will include an Auburn commit in 4* WR Matthew Hill. This will be a fascinating matchup to follow as Archer is loaded with top 2019 DB prospects like Andrew Booth and Jalyn Phillips. It will be a great early test for both sides. Brookwood also has a cornerback I really like in 3* Kendall Williamson. Both teams are loaded with D1 talent.

Colquitt County vs Norcross | Saturday | 2:45 PM

The Rush Propst lead Colquitt County Packers have plenty of Auburn targets, starting first with 4* LB JJ Peterson. Peterson is considered a heavy Alabama lean at this time but the Tigers are working hard to make this a real race. 3* QB Steven Krajewski camped at Auburn this fall and is another name to track if the Tigers were to miss on Fields. I also like the Packers 2019 RB Ty Leggett who could be someone that explodes onto the scene with a big junior season.
