NumerAUlogy — 29 Days

Harold Joiner scores his first touchdown, but keeps a year of eligibility

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#29 — Harold Joiner

Game — Auburn vs Alabama State, September 8, 2018

How’s this for an oddity: the last touchdowns scored by numbers 32, 31, 30, and 29 were all scored against teams from the state of Alabama, and they occur against four different teams!

This game had been in easily in hand since the middle of the second quarter. Alabama State couldn’t muster anything on offense (their only scores would come from a bad read by Malik Willis that resulted in a safety, and a short field touchdown after a muffed punt to cut it from 49-2 to 49-9). Jarrett Stidham didn’t even play the entire first half. By the mid-way point of the third quarter, Auburn spent a 10 play drive completely on the ground. It was finished by a true freshman lining up in the Wildcat:

2018 was the first year of the new redshirt rule where players could play in any 4 games and maintain a redshirt year, so Harold Joiner scored his first career touchdown in this game, but was still a freshman when 2019 rolled around. By that point, he was also sporting a different number, #22.

#29 is currently owned by edge-rusher extraordinaire Derick Hall. I would very much like for him to have a strip-sack-score in a big moment. Perhaps to put a game away against a rival. I feel like I’m not asking for much here.
