Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#12 — Eli Stove, WR
Game — Auburn vs. LSU, October 31, 2020
Of all the games that most of us missed in person last year, this one hurt the most:
- LSU
- On Halloween
- A freshman QB making his first road start
- The best Auburn would look all season
Both teams looked a little shaky to start, but Auburn appeared to be the better team. After a long missed field goal by LSU, Auburn went from their own 36 to the LSU 19 in 2 plays, then Seth Williams appeared to score a touchdown or maybe go out at the 1-yard line, but instead he fumbled out of the back of the endzone (your reminder that this rule is kinda dumb). Auburn didn’t let it affect them though, as Nehemiah Pritchett picked off a pass by some guy for LSU pay no attention to where he plays now I certainly don’t know, and ran it back inside the 5-yard line. After a procedure penalty, Eli Stove scored what would be his last touchdown as a Tiger.
That play remains one of my favorite RPOs. It splits the defense in two. If well blocked, the zone run could be a big hitter because the back-side safety has to stay at home for the bootleg action. In this case, they all followed the run, and Eli made a great cut to put Auburn on the board. They wouldn’t look back in a 48-11 it-wasn’t-even-that-close romp.
Oddly enough, number 12, one of the most popular numbers in football, is the sole possession of a walk-on safety, Sammy Cohen.
