Tigers land another talented instate defender.

After a painfully slow spring and early summer, Auburn’s 2022 recruiting is really starting to pickup. During Big Cat Weekend, 4-star RB Damari Alston announced his intentions to be an Auburn Tiger. This past Sunday, long time target 4-star DL Caden Story went public with his commitment. Now another instate defensive target is on the board as 3-star S Ja’Kobi Albert plans to be a Tiger.

Albert chose Auburn over a Maryland and Michigan. He also has offers from Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Penn State, and Tennessee. The Fairfield native was one of the first prospects Derek Mason offered after being hired as Auburn’s new defensive coordinator. At one point, Albert was thought to be trending towards Kentucky but the Cats did not make his final 3 and the Tigers were able to lock down the talented athlete during his visit to Big Cat Weekend.

Highlights

Scouting Report

Albert does a little of everything for Fairfield High School. The 5’11” 175 lb playmaker is coming off a very productive junior campaign where he put up over 850 all-purpose yards, scored 11 touchdowns, recorded 29 tackles, picked off a pass and broke up 9 passes. He could play wideout or defensive back at the next level but the Tigers like him on defense. More than likely he’ll see action at the field safety and nickel spots in Mason’s scheme. Nicknamed “Jet”, Albert has a bunch of straight line speed and packs a punch when he finds a ballcarrier. The big question for him will be his coverage ability at the next level. If he proves to have the quickness needed to stick with shiftier inside slot wide receivers, he’s got a chance to have a productive career for the Tigers.

The Class

In a very short amount of time, Auburn has gone from sitting outside the top 70 with the fewest commits in all of the Power 5 to tripling its number of commitments and climbing just inside the top 55. There is still plenty of more work to do but the Tigers are starting to lay the foundation to a very solid class.

Despite a lot of talk about a national focus, Bryan Harsin is still making the Alabama and Georgia priorities in his recruiting strategy. Of Auburn’s 9 commitments in the 2022 class, 7 of them hail from either Alabama or Georgia. More could be coming soon with 3-star OL Drew Bobo and 4-star WR Omari Kelly possibly having decisions in the near future.

War Eagle Ja’Kobi!
