NumerAUlogy Double Dip - 43/42 Days

We’re double dipping today after a schedule mishap yesterday. Oops!

#43 — Ian Shannon

Game — Auburn vs Liberty, November 17th, 2018

Ian Shannon didn’t have a terribly interesting career on the Plains, as a the longtime holder for the Carlson brothers and backup kicker/punter over four years from 2015-2018. However, at the end of a 53-0 beatdown of the Liberty Flames, the senior came in on extra points for the last two scores of the day.

Perhaps the more interesting part of his final kick, though, was that it was after a 16 yard touchdown scamper by Malik Willis. Against Liberty. Funny how things work out some time, isn’t it?

Oh, and by the way, this is neither the first or the last time we’ll be seeing highlights from this game.

Currently on the roster, #43 is held by linebacker Kameron Brown. He’s likely still a depth piece on this years team with the two standouts leading the linebacker room, so if he’s to score it would have to come on special teams or late in a blowout win. Consider it unlikely.

#42 — Jay Jay Wilson

Game — Auburn vs Arkansas, October 19th, 2019

If Gus Malzahn was consistent for one thing, it was pouring it on his former employer. In this edition of proving the Hawg Hex was a joke, Auburn posted nearly 500 yards of offense and 51 points in Fayetteville. Mind you, those 491 yards likely would have been a lot more had Arkansas not put up four turnovers, including one of the most mind-boggling special teams plays you’ll ever see.

But that’s not why we’re here! In the fourth quarter, our old friend Joey Gatewood stepped in at quarterback up 27, and pushed the ball down into the Arkansas redzone.

The play was simple. With no over the top safety help, Gatewood found Jay Jay Wilson one-on-one with his defender, and delivered a perfect ball to the transfer tight end.

This was Wilson’s only touchdown in his one year in orange and blue.

As far as I can see, nobody will be wearing the #42 jersey in 2021, so I doubt we see any scoring in that uniform this year.
