Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#40 — Tony Richardson, FB
Game — Auburn @ Georgia, November 13, 1993
Auburn entered the 1993 rendition of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry at 9-0 and ranked in the top 10. Georgia entered 4-5 and knew they’d need to win to have a chance at a bowl game. So obviously Georgia was a 1.5 point favorite...
After forcing a 3-and-out on Georgia’s first possession, Auburn got to work. One thing Terry Bowden’s teams always did well was use the fullback. Bowden’s first season corresponded with two of the best Auburn ever had in Reid McMillon and Tony Richardson. Richardson actually finished the season second on the team in receptions, and the two fullbacks combined for 136 touches for 848 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns. As Auburn entered the red zone for the first time on the day, Bowden called Tony’s number:
Auburn’s bread-and-butter play sequences are all involved here. The toss sweep action by Bostic occupies the boundary safety, while Stan White’s bootleg occupies the other one. Richardson busts through a huge hole and scampers for 6. Auburn would never trail in this one and won it 42-28.
Richardson would go on to a long NFL career despite going undrafted. After a year on the Cowboys practice squad, he signed with the Chiefs where he would play for 11 years and eventually be inducted into their Hall of Fame. After a short stint with the Vikings, Richardson finished his career with the Jets, and he was named the NFL’s Man of the Year in 2010, his final year as a pro.
Currently, #40 is split between walk-on Flynn Driscoll and freshman tight end Landen King. King is a highly-touted freshman, and given the new staff’s talk around the use of the tight end position, that could be a good bet to see #40’s first score in 28 years.
