Auburn Baseball In The Pros (Part 3)

NCAA Baseball: College World Series-Auburn vs Louisville
Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

Several members of Auburn’s 2019 College World Series run are featured in today’s version of Auburn Baseball in the Pros.

A couple years ago, I started to keepup with former Auburn Basketball players after their time in Auburn to see how their professional careers were going. Recently, with the offseason boring me to tears, I decided to take a deep look into what is my second favorite sport on Auburn’s campus: Baseball.

With Memorial Day behind us, we are 2 months into the MLB season and 4 weeks into the Minor League Baseball season. On Tuesday, we look at former Auburn players playing at the Major League level, yesterday we looked at how guys are faring at the AAA and AA level. Today, we will wrap this up looking at both the High A and Low A levels where you will see several players that were on the 2019 College World Series team.

High A

Tanner Burns - P, Lake County Captains

Tanner Burns was drafted last year by the Cleveland Indians with the 36th pick in the 2020 MLB Draft after 3 years in Auburn. Tanner made 36 career starts at Auburn and had a career 2.86 ERA on the Plains. He’s made four starts so far for the Captains this year and while the numbers may not wow you, he has a pretty good chance of getting to AA this season. Opposing batters are hitting just .212 against him this season.

Full Season Stats

4 Starts, 0-2, 17 23 innings, 14 hits, 9 runs, 8 ER, 3 BB, 20 Ks, 4.08 ERA

Davis Daniel - P, Tri City Dust Devils

Davis Daniel pitched for Auburn from 2017-2019 and was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 7th Round of the 2019 MLB Draft. He ended up having to have Tommy John surgery and missed a good portion of the 2019 season but has bounced back nicely so far for the Angels. Two starts ago, he struck out 11 and last night he was dealing once again for the Dust Devils finishing with 8 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. If he keeps pitching like this, he might pitching near a town near you before the season ends as the Angels Double-A affiliate is the Rocket City Trash Pandas.

Full Season Stats

5 starts, 1-2, 23 23 innings, 17 hits, 8 runs, 8 earned runs, 16 walks, 33 Ks, 3.04 ERA

Daniel Robert - P, Hickory Crawdads

Robert played for Auburn from 2014-2017 and was a utility guy of sorts spending time in the field while also making occasional pitching appearances. The Texas Rangers drafted him in the 21st Round of the 2017 MLB Draft and remains in their organization. He’s only made 2 appearances out of the bullpen this year due to injury.

Full Season Stats

2 games, 3 13 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, 6 Ks, 5.40 ERA

Low A

Ryan Watson - P, Delmarva Shorebirds

Watson, an Auburn native, pitched for his hometown Tigers from 2017-2020. He was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a non-drafted free agent and is pitching in their organization. He has made 2 starts in his 4 appearances this season with the Shorebirds and has a 2-0 record and has a 2.89 ERA.

Full Season Stats

4 games, 9 13 innings, 10 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 18 Ks, 2.89 ERA

Bailey Horn - P, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers

Bailey pitched for Auburn during the 2019 and 2020 seasons and the White Sox drafted him in the 5th Round of the 2020 MLB Draft. He started the Tigers 2019 College World Series game against Louisville and stepped up in the postseason helping the Tigers get to Omaha. He has spent time as both a starter and reliever this season.

Full Season Stats

4 games, 2 starts, 10 23 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs, 5 earned runs, 3 walks, 11 Ks, 4.22 ERA

Edouard Julien - 2B/DH, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels

Ohhh Canada!! Edouard was one of my favorite players while he was at Auburn as he hit 27 homers during the 2018 and 2019 seasons he spent on the Plains.

The Minnesota Twins took him in the 19th Round of the 2019 MLB Draft and he elected to go pro. He is playing second base and DHing for the Mighty Mussels. He’s been a nightly presence in the lineup hitting .314 so far this season with a .487 OBP.

Full Season Stats

26 games, 27-86, .314 average, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 27 BB, 10 stolen baes, 8 doubles, 1 triple

Will Holland - SS, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels

Holland played for Auburn from 2017 to 2019. He was a 5th Round Pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2019 MLB Draft and he and Julien are both currently playing in Fort Myers. Unfortunately, Holland has been hurt most of the year and has played only 5 games this season.

Full Season Stats

5 games, 2-15, .133 average, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 runs, 1 double, 3 walks, .278 OBP

Matt Scheffler - C, Modesto Nuts

After spending the 2019 and 2020 season with Auburn, Matt Scheffler was signed by the Seattle Mariners, his hometown team as an undrafted free agent. Scheffler has split time catching for Modesto this season appearing in 13 games so far this season.

Full Season Stats

13 games, 14-49, .286 average, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 11 runs, 4 doubles, .375 OBP

Finally to end this, I want to mention two other former Auburn pitchers that are recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Trey Wingenter, who pitched for Auburn from 2013-2015, plays for the San Diego Padres. He had his surgery last July and is expected to miss the entire 2021 season.

Calvin Coker pitched for Auburn in 2017 and 2018 and is part of the Oakland A’s Organization. He is currently assigned to the Low-A affiliate, the Stockton Ports as he continues to recover.

So that’s the list, let me know if this is something you want to see again in the future and thanks for reading!
