Tip-Off Countdown: #5 (11) Auburn 91 (18) LSU 90 (OT)

As Auburn began the second half of the SEC Schedule, first place was on the line as LSU came to town. The Bayou Bengals were coming off a surprising loss at Vanderbilt, which ended a 26-game losing streak in the SEC for the Commodores (I was in attendance for this one).

Unlike a lot of games in SEC play, Auburn actually got off to a decent start in this one and led 12-8 after 7 minutes. But LSU went on a 15-0 run over the next 4 minutes and led 23-12 with 9 minutes left in the half. Samir Doughty would temporarily stop the bleeding with a 3 pointer but LSU scored 7 straight after then to take a 30-15 lead.

Auburn needed a spark and it came from a guy who had a grand total of 0 points in his previous 4 games. Devan Cambridge had not scored since his breakout 26 point performance against South Carolina. Devan knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and Samir Doughty hit his 2nd of the afternoon as part of an 11-0 Auburn run to cut LSU’s lead to 32-28.

But LSU would finish the half on a 10-2 run as LSU finished 7-15 from 3 in the first half. LSU led 42-30 at halftime.

Throughout most of the 2nd half, every time Devan Cambridge made a 3, and tried to get Auburn back in the game, LSU always had a response. Auburn trailed by double digits for a good chunk of the 2nd half but with 3 minutes left, they had chipped away enough to find themselves down just 4, 65-61.

LSU led 69-61 with about 90 seconds to go and things didn’t look great for Auburn.... until J’Von McCormick suddenly started hitting 3s. He hit, not 1, not 2 but 3 3-pointers in 20 seconds and suddenly... it was 74-72 LSU. Javonte Smart missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Auburn had a chance to tie or take the lead.

McCormick couldn’t get a 4th 3-pointer to go but his and Samir’s defense forced a steal and a layup from Samir improbably tied the game at 74.

LSU’s 3-point attempt at the end of regulation and once again, we were heading to Overtime and Auburn Arena had come unglued.... or so we thought.

The 3s continued to fall early in Overtime as both Samir Doughty and Devan Cambridge knocked down a pair of 3s in the first 3 minutes of Overtime as Auburn led 86-79 with 2 minutes left in OT. And Samir was fired up about it too...

This wasn’t Isaac Okoro’s best scoring game by any means, but one of the best plays in this game came late in OT courtesy of Isaac Okoro. Man I can’t wait to see him do this in Cleveland.

Auburn couldn’t put this game away from the free throw line though and LSU took advantage. LSU cut Auburn’s lead to 1 with 15 seconds left and then forced a turnover from Doughty and converted a dunk to take a 90-89 lead with 9 seconds left. Auburn had one final chance to win this game and it was #VintageJVon time.....

Sometimes you don’t even need a second. J’Von’s floater with 1 tenth of a second left was the difference as Auburn improved to 21-2 on the year and 8-2 in the SEC, alongside LSU.

Auburn made 18 3-pointers in this game, on 44 attempts. All but 1 of those came from 3 players.

Samir Doughty led the Tigers in scoring with 26 points and was 5-11 from 3-point range.

J’Von McCormick nearly had a triple-double in this one: 23 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. He was 5-10 from 3-point range.

Devan Cambridge had 21 points, all on 3-pointers, as he was 7-10 from 3-point range.

Austin Wiley had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Isaac Okoro had 9 points and 6 rebounds.
