NCAA Basketball: Alabama at Auburn

Alabama made more 3s than any team in 1 game in SEC History..... and still lost.

February 12, 2020 - Auburn Arena

Over the previous 2 seasons, Auburn had lived and died off the 3. Fast forward to the 2019-2020 season and a lot of what Alabama did offensively eerily resembled the way Auburn had played the previous 2 seasons. You know they say, Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Which makes what Alabama did on this night quite remarkable. Alabama made 22 3s in this contest, the most in a single game in SEC history.....

And they lost! That takes talent folks.

Auburn came into this game on a huge high after their thrilling win over LSU the previous Saturday. Now, they looked for some payback against the team that gave them their first loss of the season.

Anfernee McLemore scored the first 8 for Auburn on a pair of 3s and a dunk in the first 2+ minutes. McLemore’s early burst was part of an incredible start for Auburn as the Tigers began the game on a 16-0 run over the first 4 minutes and change.

But the Tide settled in as the 3-pointers began to fall and Alabama began to claw their way back into this one. Alabama made 9 3-pointers in the first half of this game and after an early 16 point hole, they found themselves only down 3, 44-41 at halftime.

Alabama’s 10th 3 of the night tied the game in the first minute of the second half but while Alabama relied on the 3 ball, the Tigers feasted in the paint.

Austin Wiley’s offensive rebound and put back basket put Auburn back in front and then Isaac Okoro decided it was time to go coast to coast.

With Auburn up 60-58, Auburn went on a 10-1 run to take a 70-59 lead with about 9 minutes to go. Alabama would hang in but Auburn still led by 10, 76-66, with 6 minutes to go after a 3 from Devan Cambridge.

Jaden Shackelford hit back to back 3s for Alabama but a 3-point play from Samir Doughty made it 79-72 with 5 minutes to go. Auburn wouldn’t make another shot in regulation. And as bad as that was... it paled in comparison to what would happen with less than 2 minutes to go in regulation. While going for a loose ball, Isaac Okoro, who scored 12 in the second half, came up lame and had to leave the game. It was a pulled hamstring for Isaac that would sideline him for the next 3 games. Losing Isaac was a huge blow on both ends of the floor for Auburn as he was sorely missed.

Auburn led 81-78 in the closing seconds but a 3 from John Petty, Alabama’s 19th of the night tied the game at 81. J’Von McCormick looked for back to back game winners, but his 3 was off the mark and for the 3rd straight game, and 4th in the last 5, Auburn headed to Overtime.

Auburn started the extra session on an 8-0 run thanks to a pair of buckets from Samir Doughty and one from Austin Wiley. Alabama would hit a pair of 3s to pull within 3, 91-88 with a minute to go but Wiley would put an exclamation point on one of his best games as an Auburn Tiger.

Alabama would hit one more 3 pointer but J’Von McCormick would hit 2 free throws in the final 20 seconds to provide the final margin as Alabama’s 59th 3-point attempt fell by the wayside in the final seconds. The 59 attempts was also a SEC record for attempts in a game.

Before his injury, Isaac Okoro led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points and also had 9 rebounds.

Austin Wiley was phenomenal in his final game against the Crimson Tide, scoring 18 points while also grabbing a career high 17 rebounds along with 5 blocks.

Samir Doughty also had 18 points and had 7 rebounds.

Anfernee McLemore had 13 points and 7 rebounds, Devan Cambridge had 10 points with J’Von McCormick scoring 9 points to go with 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Here are the highlights!
