Tip-Off Countdown: #63 (19) Auburn 95 LSU 70

NCAA Basketball: Louisiana State at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Blowout City!

January 27, 2018 - Auburn Arena

So this was the game where I started a new tradition: I changed my spot in the Jungle to move directly across from the Auburn bench. This is one of the best things I did during my time in the Jungle.

The annual AUTLIVE game returned to Auburn Arena as Auburn welcomed Tremont Waters and Will Wade to the Jungle for the first time. And while I was excited to see this freshman for LSU live for the first time, it was not a pleasant experience for he or anyone from LSU.

Auburn would start the game on a 3-point barrage that would turn the lights out on the Bayou Bengals as quickly as the game started.

Mustapha Heron would come out of the gate “en fuego” get the party started with a 3 on the first possession. He would hit another one 2 possessions later. Bryce Brown would hit a 3 the next time down and then Heron would hit 2 more 3s in the next 2 possessions. Heron would then score from 2-point range on the next two possessions and Will Wade had seen enough. 5 minutes in and it was 19-6 and Heron already had scored 16 points.

While Heron set the tone, Auburn then got contributions from other plays as they continued to build their double-digit lead. A 3 from Anfernee McLemore would put Auburn up 20 for the first time, 42-22, with 5:42 left in the first half. Auburn led 51-32 at halftime.

Auburn continued to hold about a 17-22 point lead throughout the 2nd half but Malik Dunbar would bring the house down midway through the 2nd half.

Auburn led 73-50 and had turned the ball over. As LSU began their possession, Desean Murray would steal a pass and start a 3 on 0 break. Murray threw a pass to Jared Harper who would throw it up for a peak #ClassicMalik moment.

Auburn never took their foot off the gas pedal in this one and as a fan who is so used to close heart-stopping finishes, this one felt really really good.

Auburn finished 11-23 from 3 and led by as much as 32 in the 2nd half.

Mustapha Heron who scored 16 in the first 5 minutes, finished with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Desean Murray had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Bryce Brown hit 5 3-points to account for all 15 of his points. Chuma Okeke led the 2nd unit scoring 14 points off the bench. Jared Harper had 11 points and 8 assists.

And oh, I couldn’t finish talking about this game without bringing this up. Sorry Jared.

Here are the highlights!
