Tip-Off Countdown: #60 (11) Auburn 78 Georgia 61

NCAA Basketball: Auburn at Georgia Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

SWEEEEEP

February 10, 2018 - Athens, Georgia

This one’s a special one for me personally. It was the first time I had ever traveled for an Auburn Basketball game. Auburn fans took over Stegeman Coliseum for this one as a large contingent of Auburn fans made the trip for this one.

Bryce Brown missed this game with a shoulder injury suffered in the Texas A&M game so the Tigers came into Georgia following a loss and even more shorthanded than normal. Malik Dunbar would start in his place.

Anfernee McLemore and Desean Murray got it started with buckets for Auburn but then Georgia native Jared Harper would score Auburn’s next 12 points over a 4 minute stretch early in the 1st half, including a pair of 3-pointers for an early 17-9 lead.

After a 6-0 Georgia run, Auburn would go on a 9-1 run while Harper was resting on the bench behind buckets from 4 different players to take a 26-16 lead.

Georgia would cut the deficit to 2 and trailed 33-31 with 2 minutes left in the half but Auburn finished with a flurry behind baskets from Murray, a 3 from Mustapha Heron and a steal and breakaway layup by Jared Harper as Auburn led 40-31 at halftime.

Georgia would start the half on a 9-3 run but the Tigers would regain their 10 point lead with a 3-point play converted by Chuma Okeke, a basket by Davion Mitchell and a 3 from Mustapha Heron.

Georgia would get no closer than 7 the rest of the way. Auburn would pull away down the stretch thanks to 3-pointers from Davion Mitchell, Malik Dunbar, Chuma Okeke, Jared Harper and Mustapha Heron encapsulating the true team effort this game took as they played without Bryce Brown.

The best part of this one was seeing all of the Georgia fans head for the exits while the Auburn contingent made plenty of noise down the stretch.

The win moved Auburn to 22-3, 10-2 in the SEC and was Auburn’s first sweep of Georgia since the 1985-1986 season.

Jared Harper led the way with 24 points and 7 assists and was 4-7 from 3-point range. Mustapha Heron had 19 points. Malik Dunbar had 7 points and 6 rebounds while Davion Mitchell had 7 off the bench.

Here are the highlights!

And after Bruce’s postgame interview with Rod and Sonny, he made sure to come over to thank the masses for making the trip.

War Eagle!
