Some surprises on the defensive side of the ball

Gus Malzahn released the opening week depth chart and there were some interesting surprises especially on the defensive side of the ball. Check it out.

Some quick reactions.

  • WOW! Did not see Colby Wooden starting at the DT next to Truesdell. I was a big fan of Wooden coming out of high school but assumed his future was on the edge. Kevin Steele though praised the fredshirt freshman last week and it appears he’s done enough to earn the starting no replacing Derrick Brown
  • The other bigger surprise was at cornerback. Heading into camp the assumption was it would be a 2 man battle between JUCO signee Marco Domio and sophomore Nehemiah Pritchett. Steele surprised folks by saying it was in fact at 5 man competition and today we learned he wasn’t lying. Redshirt freshman Jaylin Simpson saw limited action last fall mostly at free safety but put together a strong summer and fall camp to earn the starting nod. I should note there is no OR between Pritchett and Domio
  • Malzahn will not give us the satisfaction of knowing who starts at left tackle with Alec Jackson and Austin Troxell both listed as starters. It will be interesting to see if both get snaps this weekend.
  • No major surprises at wide receiver with Seth getting the nod at the 9, Anthony Schwartz and Eli stove named co-starters at the 2 and Shedrick Jackson leading the way at the 5. I was surprised to see Kobe Hudson listed as the #2 guy at the 9 behind Seth.
  • Some important names not listed. Harold Joiner was not included as part of the OR party at running back behind Shaun Shivers. Tyler Fromm appears to have been passed by the true freshman as well. Walk on Devin Guice is listed at safety over junior Malcolm Askew. Redshirt freshman Ja’Varrius Johnson only listed as a backup punt returner
  • Finally, another interesting note on the defensive line. Jeremiah Wright has apparently switched to the defensive side of the ball and done enough to at least get his name mentioned. True freshman Zykeivous Walker is listed above JUCO signees Dre Butler and Marquis Burns as Truesdell’s backup. I expect all though to see action this Saturday
