There will be football this weekend in the state of Alabama

It’s been a weird year. In a world where agreement seems frowned upon, I do think we can come to a consensus that 2020 has sucked. As such, I understand the skepticism and concern over any attempts at football being played this fall. But personally, I am happy there’s gonna be some football this weekend and excited to see some big time high school prospects in action.

While a number of states have cancelled the fall football season others are at least going to give it attempt, starting this week in Alabama. A number of Auburn commits and top targets will take the field this weekend. Is it a good idea? I don’t know. Will we make it to the end of the season? No clue. Am I happy there’s at least some football to watch? You bet.

Here are some notable matchups to pay attention to this weekend

Hewitt-Trussville @ Pinson Valley

Hewitt-Trussville Players to Know: 4-star RB Armoni Goodwin, 2022 4-star DE Justice Finkley, 4-star OT Riley Quick, 3-star CB Trey Washington (Ole Miss), 2022 ATH Omari Kelly, LB Michael Edwards
Pinson Players To Know: 5-star CB Ga’Quincy McKinstry, 3-star RB Kenji Christian, 3-star OL Rayvon Crum, DE James Perkins (Air Force), DT Julian Peterson (Troy), 2022 QB Caleb Nix

Auburn’s top DB target Ga’Quincy McKinstry kicks off his senior season tonight against longtime Auburn commit Armoni Goodwin. This is a fascinating matchup featuring two programs loaded with D1 talent. While a lot of eyes will be on Kool-Aid, I am most interested in seeing how Goodwin looks coming off a devastating knee injury last fall. It’s easy to forget that he was challenging for the #1 RB spot in this class before his injury. I imagine there are some mental hurdles to clear so hopefully he can break off a few big runs and start building his confidence backup.

Oxford @ Thompson

Oxford Players to Know: 2022 4-star CB Trequon Fegans, 3-star WR Roc Taylor (Tennessee), 3-star CB Delvon Fegans, 3-star QB Trey Higgins
Thompson Players to Know: 2022 5-star DE Jeremiah Alexander (Alabama), 3-star WR Sam Reynolds (South Carolina), 3-star WR Tre Roberson (Army)

There are two big prospects to keep an eye on this matchup. Auburn is working hard to flip Tennessee commit Roc Taylor. The Oxford standout chose Tennessee earlier this spring before the Tigers finally offered. They’ve been in hot pursuit since and there is some confidence that he could end up in Auburn’s class before signing day.

The other name to monitor is Trequon Fegans. He will be one of the top players in the 2022 class and Auburn is deep in this race. He’ll be facing the current #1 player in Alabama for next cycle in Alabama commit Jeremiah Alexander. This should be a good showdown between two programs known for producing SEC talent.

Ramsay @ Bessemer City

Ramsay Players to Know: 4-star Buck Jeremiah Williams, 4-star DT Tim Keenan

Auburn’s top pass rushing target will take the field for the first time this fall. Scooby Williams recently released a final 4 of Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Oklahoma. The Gators are believed to be the Tigers toughest competition but don’t sleep on the Dawgs. Williams’s teammate Tim Keenan is trending towards UGA at the moment. There still seems to be confidence on the Plains that Williams will end up a Tiger but Auburn still has plenty of work ahead.

Geneva County @ Opp

Geneva Players to Know: 2022 5-star RB Emmanuel Henderson

Arguably Auburn’s top target in the 2022 class kicks off his season on the road tonight. Emmanuel Henderson has a chance to be the state’s top ranked player next cycle and is already considered a Tiger lean. Can Carnell Williams land another top 5 back?
