Newspapers, AP described Bama’s 1961 national championship as its first

We know that, once upon a Tide, folks at Alabama thought that Auburn had them beat on the national title race by four whole years.

But what about papers other than the Crimson-White?

Did Joe Reporter covering Wherever, USA think that Bama’s 1961 national championship was its very first? And not 1925 or 1926 or 1930 or 1934 of 1941?

Yes.

Here’s the Anniston Star.

And here’s the AP…

And more from the AP…

And even more…

It’s one thing to see their old T-shirts and media guides, and to read the confession of the weaver who spun the emperor’s invisible Got 12? T-shirt in the mid-80s.

But putting an ear straight up to 1961 really hits home how radically Bama’s football history has been rewritten.
