Watch Pat Dye talk to reporters on Jan. 3, 1984 after learning Auburn finished 3rd in AP poll

Dye claimed it. He even hinted that he would claim it with hardware and everything. No. 1 in the New York Times? What’s your ring size, boys?

Not that you ever hear about it, mind you. Because maybe it never actually happened, who knows… and of course, Auburn is always sensitive about that sorta thing for some reason. But after watching reporters get a dose of that tone, a dose of that angry finger pointed at anyone who thought the Tigers deserved to be third — ONLY THIRD! — in the country, I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t at least look into it.

Enjoy.

“I mean, really and truly, our football team really deserves a little something more than being 3rd in the nation when you look at the dang schedule they played… and you know, the thing about it is, that through the whole thing, you know, the whole process, our football team… I have not heard one derogatory remark. They’re just glad to be there… not any bitterness, and I don’t believe there will be when when they find out that we’re 3rd. I think they’re going to be disappointed, just like I am. But I’m gonna tell you something else — in their heart… in their heart, deep down, they feel like they can beat anybody in the country, and I’m not so sure that they couldn’t, too.”

Ditto Pat O’Brien, hopefully.
