Chad Morris gets his dude

What a weekend.

Auburn entered Friday with 4 commits and ranked #50 overall by 247 Composite. They will leave the weekend with double the commits and up 29 spots to #21 in the team rankings. Not bad at all.

Oh and they have Bo Nix’s successor.

Today, 4* QB Dematrius Davis announced his intentions to be an Auburn Tiger.

Davis initially committed to Virginia Tech in late November. However, when Chad Morris was hired Auburn immediately made the North Shore signal caller a top priority offering in early January. The Tigers kept the heat on all spring and though weren’t able to get him on campus, were able to build strong relationships with him and his family. Eventually, Davis decided to back out of his initial pledge to Virginia Tech. Just a week and a half later he decided to make things official with the Tigers.

Highlights

Scouting Report

First off, you will be hard pressed to find a more impressive resume amongst this loaded 2021 crop of quarterback prospects. Davis has been the starting QB at Texas powerhouse North Shore High School for the past two years where he has helped lead the Mustangs to a 31-1 record and two state titles against some big time competition. Over the course of those 2 seasons he’s thrown for over 5,700 yards and 70 touchdowns while rushing for another 1,600 and 27 touchdowns. 100 touchdowns and 7,000+ yards of total offense is the type of production you can’t fake, especially against the competition he has faced.

As for the player, Davis is a stocky 5’11” 190 lb dual threat QB with the skills to excel in Auburn’s offense. He’s got outstanding short area quickness that makes him a nightmare to handle in the read option game, outstanding accuracy when throwing off RPO concepts and the ability to push the ball vertically down the field. If there’s a weakness for Davis, it’s his height and average throwing velocity. The former becoming less a problem these days and the latter something I expect to improve as he gets into a collegiate strength program. As you have probably picked up on, I am extremely high on Davis’s upside and see him as the likely successor to Bo Nix (though maybe someone in the 2022 class makes me think different).

The Class

Auburn now has some serious momentum on the trail they will look to carry into the coming weeks. The core of this offensive class is now on board and can start recruiting for the Tigers. Davis especially is well liked by some other top prospects and could help Auburn land a few more studs on that side of the ball. Bottom line, Auburn is getting some very important pieces in place at the right time that should help them sign another top 10 class come next February. It was a big weekend on the Plains.

War Eagle Dematrius!
