Not many names to breakdown on this list as of today but some big time targets nonetheless.
Over the next 2 weeks 2-3ish weeks, we will be taking a position by position look at the top targets on Auburn’s 2021 board. This is a first pass at who might be looking at Auburn the hardest this early in the cycle and whom Auburn might have the most interest in. However, recruiting is fluid and these lists will likely change.
While recruiting quality prep offensive tackles has been a struggle under Gus Malzahn, things have gone much better in the interior. The Tigers have consistently reeled in quality OG/C talent and will likely do so again in 2021. Though right now nailing down who that might be is a bit difficult. The Tigers have not offered many offensive guards or centers to this point which leads me to believe they will likely only be taking 1 or 2 this class. I think also the fact players like Brenden Coffey, Brandon Coucil, Brodarious Hamm and even Austin Troxell can all slide inside allows the staff to be a bit pickier at this position this cycle.
Here are the few names to keep an eye on early in the 2021 class.
4* Terrence Ferguson | 6’4” | 300 lbs | Fort Valley, GA
Recruitment
Likely Auburn’s top interior OL prospect, Ferguson is another highly rated offensive lineman out of the state of Georgia. Unfortunately, just like all the other highly rated OL in GA, he appears to be an early lean to the Dawgs. But Auburn is in hot pursuit and have hosted the talented prospect a number of times over the last couple of years. Alabama and Florida State are also two teams to keep an eye on in this race.
Scouting Report
A punishing force up front, Ferguson is always looking for someone to hit up to and sometimes slightly after the whistle. A well built athlete at 6’4” 300 lbs, Ferguson could play anywhere across the line at the next level though I personally think he’s a better fit in the interior. He’s already very strong though he will likely need a year to rework his body some, still he’s got the skillset to have a chance to make an early impact at whichever program he chooses.
4* James Brockermeyer | 6’3” | 273 lbs | Fort Worth, TX
Recruitment
That name should be familiar. His twin brother, Tommy Brockermeyer, is considered the best OT in this class by 247 Composite. James ain’t no slouch himself, ranked the #2 center in the class. It’s believed the two are a package deal and their top contenders Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Texas have offered both brothers spots in their classes. Like Tommy, Alabama is probably the team to beat in this race but Auburn is a major factor and if they are able to host the brothers for an official visit, they could make things interesting come decision time.
Scouting Report
Brockermeyer is one of the more technically sound prospects in this class. He consistently plays with great pad level and does an outstanding job picking up stunts in pass protection. He’s a strong run blocker as well, excelling at getting great hand position and driving defenders out of the the gap. Get him into a collegiate strength training program for a season and he will be ready to compete for playing time.
3* Jared Wilson | 6’4” | 325 lbs | Clemmons, NC
Recruitment
Wilson was once a Dawg commit but reopened his recruitment after Sam Pittman’s departure. Not long after decommitment, Auburn offered and immediately became a top contender. He plans to officially visit the Plains when he can. He put out a top 8 last month that included the Tigers. I think of the three listed players today, Wilson is the most likely to end up in orange & blue.
Scouting Report
Wilson is a big fella with great athleticism. A consistent finisher, Wilson plays with a high motor and a bit of an edge. He’s a tackle for his high school program but will likely be an interior lineman at the next level. He needs to work on his pad level and reshape his body a bit but he’s a great fit for what Auburn likes at the OG position.
