2021 Class Preview: Buck

It’s a short list but it’s loaded with talent

Over the next 2 weeks 2-3ish indeterminate number of weeks, we will be taking a position by position look at the top targets on Auburn’s 2021 board. This is a first pass at who might be looking at Auburn the hardest this early in the cycle and whom Auburn might have the most interest in. However, recruiting is fluid and these lists will likely change.

Auburn’s defense has been very good the past 2 seasons but if there has been one major weakness it’s been the lack of an elite speed rusher off the edge. In 2016, Auburn had Carl Lawson. In 2017, they had Jeff Holland. They’ve been on the hunt for the next elite pass rusher ever since.

There’s been some disappointments at that position with Richard Jubinor transferring, T.D. Moultry unable to put it all together on Saturday, Nick Coe’s regression in 2019 and Big Kat Bryant’s not yet developing into a sack master. Derick Hall came on strong at the end of last season and I am very high on Romello Height’s upside. But it sure wouldn’t hurt to add some more elite pass rushing talent in this next year’s class.

Luckily, Auburn appears poised to do just that in 2021.

5* Dylan Brooks | 6’5” | 220 lbs | Roanoke, AL

Recruitment

This is probably the recruitment Auburn fans will be keeping the closest eye on this cycle. Brooks is an AU legacy who made it to every home game in 2019. All the current 247 Crystal Ball picks are for the good guys but this is far from a lock. Alabama is hard after Brooks and reportedly feel good about where they sit in this race. Brooks apparently has connected with Ed Orgeron making LSU possibly Auburn’s toughest competition at the moment. And Jeremy Pruitt is working hard on getting the big time pass rusher up to Knoxville. Auburn is probably the team to beat but this is far from a slam dunk and the Tigers will have a fight on their hands in landing the state’s #1 player in 2021.

Scouting Report

Brooks is a blur off the edge. One of the buzz words scouts love to use when evaluating pass rushers is “bend”. Brooks has plenty of bend, outstanding length and insane quickness. He will need to bulk up some more at the next level but he’s a day 1 impact player on 3rd & long with NFL 1st round upside. In my opinion, he’s THE must sign for Auburn in the 2021 class.

4* Jeremiah Williams | 6’3” | 224 lbs | Birmingham, AL

Recruitment

Brooks isn’t the only elite pass rusher in the state of Alabama this year. Jeremiah Williams is the nation’s #5 ranked weak side defensive end per 247 and has an impressive offer list himself. But this is likely an instate battle all the way with the Tide probably holding the edge at the moment. I think it’s unlikely Williams and Brooks end up in the same class this year but Auburn will try anyway.

Scouting Report

Williams is one of the fastest closers you will see in this class. He’s got elite quickness and enough athleticism that you can line him up all over the field. He will need to bulk up in order to have the strength to set the edge at the next level but he’s got the skillset to develop into an elite pass rusher.
