THANK YOU SENIORS: J’Von McCormick

NCAA Basketball: Louisiana State at Auburn Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

We continue our thanks to the seniors by looking back at our fearless PG, J’Von McCormick!

This week, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of the seniors that contributed greatly to the success of the Auburn Basketball program. I really hoped we would celebrating their run through their 3rd consecutive NCAA Tournament but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. If you know me, I like countdowns and I thought it would be a great idea to look back at some of these senior’s best games in an Auburn uniform. Next up is Auburn’s Point Guard this season: J’Von McCormick.

Thank you J’Von for coming to Auburn! You stepped up big time at the right time last season and we wouldn’t have gotten out of the 1st Round last year without you. This year, you took over for Jared Harper and did a great job in filling those shoes. There were so many #VintageJVon moments from the past 2 years!

J’Von’s Auburn Career

Junior: 4.1 PPG, 1.4 APG

Senior: 11.7 PPG, 4.5 APG, 4 RPG

Bruce has had good luck with JUCO guys the last couple of years. First, it was Malik Dunbar and a year later, J’Von joined the Tigers after beginning his college career playing JUCO ball in Texas. Auburn needed a backup PG after Davion Mitchell left to transfer to Baylor. He came off the bench last season and saved his best for last. Despite being one of the smallest guys on the floor, J’Von thrived driving the ball into the paint and making tough shots while absorbing contact.

That was #VintageJVon.

He played a season high 23 minutes in the SEC Championship game and then scored a season high 16 points in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tournament against New Mexico State. J’Von played incredible while Jared dealt with foul trouble in those 2 games and there is no Final Four without him.

He then had 10 points in the Sweet 16 win over North Carolina.

Fast forward to his senior year, and J’Von’s minutes and production went up with a much bigger role. He holds the school record for most assists in a game handing out 16 assists in the 116-70 win over Cal State Northridge on November 15th.

Here are J’Von’s 5 biggest scoring games as an Auburn Tiger:

5. 12/14/2019: 20 points vs Saint Louis

This was the game that #ScoringJVon arrived. Many had wanted to see more aggression out of McCormick and we did in this game. He was 7-14 from the field, and 4-8 from 3-point range. J’Von also had 7 rebounds and 6 assists, a 67-61 win over the Billikens in Birmingham. Auburn Point Guards have played well in the Magic City the last 2 seasons.

4. 2/15/2020: 21 points at Missouri

With Isaac Okoro sidelined, McCormick did what he could to keep to give Auburn a chance to win. He was 6-9 from the field and 9-13 from the free throw line in a losing effort.

3. 2/19/2020: 22 points at Georgia

You’ll notice that J’Von had 3 of his top 5 scoring games in a 4 game stretch in February. McCormick was 9-22 from the field and 3-8 from 3-point range.

2. 2/8/2020: 23 points vs LSU

This will be the game everyone remembers J’Von for. McCormick got red hot from 3-point range late when it looked like the game was lost, hitting 3 3-pointers in the last minute which allowed Auburn to get to overtime, in one of the most miraculous comebacks we’ve seen on the Plains in some time. Then he did this to cap off his 23 point day:

Classic #VintageJVon.

1. 1/4/2020: 28 points at Mississippi State

This was a really good win for Auburn to open SEC play and J’Von went off in Starkville! He was 9-17 from the field, 2-6 from 3 and 8-11 from the free throw line. J’Von hit tough shot after tough shot when Mississippi State would make a run in an 80-68 win over the Bulldogs.

I would be re missed if I didn’t mention the game at Arkansas in which J’Von had his jersey ripped and had to put on the Horace Spencer #55 blood jersey. That guy was special, leading another double digit comeback late, in another game Auburn pulled out in Overtime this season.

Once again, thank you J’Von!!! I know the Auburn family is glad you were a part of this basketball team the past 2 seasons and we’ll be pulling for you at the next level!

Tomorrow, we’ll continue the series by looking at another one of Auburn’s seniors.
