March Madness Viewing Guide - 3/9/2020

NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga at Brigham Young Jeffrey Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

The games you need to watch and how they affect your Tigers.

March Madness can be overwhelming. In less than two weeks, you’ll have some sixty odd teams you’ve never seen play on your television. Of course, you want to know more about that 13 seed from the Southland conference than Joe Schmoe at work, right? Especially when Auburn inevitably draws that team in the first round.

Well if that’s the case, you may as well start keeping an eye out now. Each day until Selection Sunday, we’re going to be providing you with the guide for every game you need to watch as an Auburn fan. Whether it’s teams Auburn is competing with for a bubble spot, or teams that Auburn could draw in a first round matchup, we’re going to list them right here for you.

Monday is admittedly a light day, as a lot of tournaments are in their first round with teams that aren’t anywhere near the bubble, or haven’t even started yet. We do have two games for you, though, and I’d be willing to bet most of us haven’t seen them play a minute this season.

NOTE: The numbers in parentheses represent the projected seeds by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi and teamrankings.com, respectively.

The SOCON Championship game will feature a heavy favorite in 29-4 ETSU against an overmatched Wofford. The Terriers lost their last seven conference games before putting together a nice SOCON Tournament run. They’ve played well vs ETSU, though, losing two games to them this season by only a combined 7 points. Should ETSU clinch a bid tonight, they could range anywhere from an 8 seed down to an 11, where it wouldn’t be inconceivable that they’d match up with a 6-seeded Auburn.

Late tonight, the WCC Semifinals pit BYU against a good St. Mary’s team. BYU should be a tournament team no matter the outcome of this game, but they’re battling with teams like Auburn around the 4-6 seed range. The Cougars are actually 12th in KenPom and are on a 9 game win streak, and are actually the best three-point shooting team in the country this year at 42%. I certainly wouldn’t want to face them in a potential second round matchup if they were paired with Auburn as a 4/5 seed combo.
