Top 5 Plays: South Carolina

NCAA Basketball: South Carolina at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

We’re all big Devan Cambridge fans here!

Last night, we saw a breakout performance from freshmen Devan Cambridge. Cambridge had a grand total of 52 points in first 17 games in an Auburn uniform. Last night, he had 26, meaning 13 of his total points came in last night’s game, incredible. It’s safe to say there were some out there that saw this kind of game coming from Devan.

The Tigers were struggling offensively early last night, but Cambridge came in and gave the team an immediate spark.

Play #1 - Devan gets the scoring started!

Auburn was 2-12 from the field and missed their first 6 3-point attempts. Auburn was trailing 15-8 until Cambridge hit his first 3 of the night.

Play #2 - #ClassicDevan

We’ve talked a bit about how Devan Cambridge reminds us of Malik Dunbar in many ways, this is a Malik-like play.... Andy Kennedy mentioned on the broadcast about knowing something is going to happen when Cambridge gets out on the floor.

Play #3 - Another Devan 3 and the Auburn Bench Mobs Him

Devan was feeling it in the 1st half. He had just banked a 3-pointer in to put Auburn up 6. That 3 reminded me of the night Anfernee McLemore had his breakout game a few years ago on a night he hit 4 3s, including a banked-in 3 and an alley-oop. Here Devan gets the benefit of a beautiful pass from Issac Okoro and Cambridge knocks down the shot.

Play #4 - THROW IT DOWN!!!!

At this point, Cambridge had 22 points and we were all absolutely marveling at his performance. He hit 6 3s on the night but the night needed one more exclamation point:

Play #5 - Cambridge Hits 26

Devan got 26 points in just 21 minutes tonight. Here he gets back and Okoro finds him once again for a layup with the Jungle going absolutely crazy. Cambridge sparked Auburn in the 1st half and made shots in the 2nd half to thwart any comeback threat from South Carolina.

As great as tonight was for Devan, the one thing he didn’t do well was shoot free throws. Auburn was 18-21 as a team but Cambridge was 0-2. So what was Devan doing after everyone was patting him on the back, telling him how great of a game he had just played...

If this doesn’t embody Auburn and what it stands for, I don’t know what does.

“I Believe in Work, Hard Work” - Auburn Creed

I hope we can see more games where he gives the Tigers good minutes off the bench. He’s shown he has the capability to go off like he did last night and while no one expects him to score 26 every night, becoming a scorer off the bench will only make Auburn stronger as the season rolls along. Enjoy the moment Devan and congrats on the huge breakout performance! We all enjoyed watching you put on a show!
