Malzahn Ready to Turn Chad Morris Loose With Offense

If there is one thing that seems consistent about Gus Malzahn’s tenure at Auburn it’s been his constant taking the offensive reigns away from his coordinators and then at times saying he will turn the reigns over to his OC.

On Tuesday, Gus did it again, just one year from taking over the play calling, he announce that his new offensive coordinator, Chad Morris would run the offense in 2020. “You don’t hire a guy like Chad,” Gus said. “and not give him full control.” However, since Morris is a Gus Malzahn disciple, the offense should mirror Malzahn’s philosophy.

It’s been well documented that the two old friends go way back. But he does have a resume’ in his own right having put together high scoring offenses at Tulsa, Clemson, and SMU. His SMU Mustang’s were ranked 12th in in the nation in 2017 averaging close to 500 yards per game while scoring 38 per contest.

Many see the rise of Dabo Sweeney at Clemson as directly related to Morris’s ability to coach record setting QB Tajh Boyd, recruit Deshaun Watson and installing an offense that is still, for the most part, run by the Purple Tigers today.

He has already made a connection with some of the players including quarterback Bo Nix who said he’s excited about working with his new coordinator.

“Chad Morris is one of the best offensive minds in college football. He’s going to take our offense and he’s going to run with it, said Gus. “We’re ready to turn him loose.”
