BOOM! 4-Star Defensive Back Eric Reed Jr Commits to Auburn!

What a way to finish a big day on the trail for the Tigers

4* DB Eric Reed Jr was once the gem of Matt Luke’s 2020 signing class. The Rebels offered the Louisiana standout last November and became one of his top programs. He committed to Ole Miss in June following a camp and looked locked in. But both Auburn and Georgia came calling just before the season started shaking up his recruitment. He took an official visit to Auburn in November and decommitted from the Rebels the following week. From then on it was strictly an Auburn vs Georgia battle.

Even after his official visit to the Plains the prevalent thought was the Dawgs would be too tough to beat. He took an official visit to Athens this past weekend along with three other top DB targets and it sure seemed like this one was gonna be a long shot for Auburn. But as the days crept closer to Early Signing Day the buzz changed. The feeling was maybe Auburn was in this more than people realized.

Turns out they absolutely were.

This is a huge win for Auburn on the trail. Reed was a high priority target for the Dawgs and absolutely a take. Both teams are looking to load up on talented DBs this cycle to counter the insane passing attacks taking over the SEC. For Auburn to beat Kirby Smart out for this kid on signing day is a huge victory for Gus Malzahn.

Highlights

Scouting Report

Reed is a speedy athlete with a lot of size and physicality. He’s versatile, capable of playing really anywhere in the secondary at the next level. He’s a kid with a lot of speed capable of matching up 1 on 1 with slot WRs and not getting beat over the top. My guess is he starts out at corner for the Tigers but could move anywhere needed over his career. A ton of upside and chance to make a very early impact.

The Class

What a day huh? Auburn finishes 4/5 on their top targets with 22 signees total and 2 more committed. That means worst case scenario, Auburn only has to fill 3 more spots. If Jay Hardy and Jonathan Buskey stick then it’s just one. That is where you want to be heading into the late period these days. It means AU can focus all their energy on just a select few high profile targets and begin turning their attention to the 2021 class. This is the best position Gus Malzahn has been in since the start of this new early signing period. Now he just needs to go flip a 5* OT.

This secondary is quite the group. All four have a chance to crack the two deep with Thompson backing up Sherwood, Tennison at Star or safety and then Reed and Domio battling for reps on the outside. Add this group to the talent Auburn already has brought in the last two classes and it’s hard not to feel good about this secondary even with the upcoming attrition.

War Eagle Eric!
