2021 is off to a roaring start

Nice things are happening for Gus Malzahn’s football program right now. On Friday, Auburn stole 4* DE Zykeivous Walker’s commitment from the Dawgs. On Saturday, Auburn ended Alabama’s hopes of a national championship with an epic Iron Bowl victory. Today, Auburn lands the pledge of one of the nation’s best in the 2021 class in 5* DT Lee Hunter.

Not a bad past couple of days huh?

Name a program and it’s likely they have offered the Blount High School standout. Hunter was and will likely continue to be heavily pursued by the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Florida and LSU. But this recruitment has always looked to be heading in Auburn’s way. Following his visit to the Plains for the War Eagle Picnic, Hunter told AuburnSports.com that the schools he’s currently looking at are “Auburn, Auburn, Auburn, Auburn.”

Hunter did not make it to the Iron Bowl, instead choosing to visit Gainseville for that ugly beatdown but reportedly did get to watch the game. Following that UF visit, he tweeted that he planned on ending his recruitment this morning. Given the timing there was a little concern that maybe the Gators had made a run but it turns out they weren’t even in the final 5. In the end, Hunter chose the program that had always been at the top of his list in the Auburn Tigers.

Scouting Report

Unfortunately, Hunter doesn’t have any publicly available 2019 tape that I could find but you can get a taste of his talent in the highlight above. Hunter is a massive human being at 6’5” 292 lbs. He could easily play at 310 and not lose a step. He also plays both ways for his high school team and could honestly be a highly rated offensive tackle if he decided to switch sides. But his future is likely on the defensive side of the ball in the interior where he is an absolute nightmare for offenses to contain. This past season he’s compiled 50+ tackles, 10+ TFL and 9 sacks. Expect those numbers to climb even further during his senior year. Hunter will have a chance, just like former 5* DTs Montravius Adams and Derrick Brown, to make an impact immediately for the Tigers in 2021.

The Class

To say that Auburn is off to a fast start in the 2021 class would be a bit of an understatement. Auburn currently holds commitments from now four players all ranked in the top 300 with two in the 65. Auburn also now holds pledges from the state’s #3 & #4 players. On top of that, the Tigers are considered the team to beat for the state’s #1 overall player 5* DE Dylan Brooks and a top contender for #2 5* DB Ga’Quincy McKinstry. There is a long way to go and as we have seen plenty of times, these early big booms can be hard to hold onto but right now the Tigers are off to a fantastic start to next year’s 2021 recruiting class.
