GAME RECAP: #22 Auburn 116, CSUN 70

NCAA Basketball: Arkansas at Auburn John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

That was easy.

Well, if this game had happened last year, Samir Doughty would have been included just before tipoff on Dr. McLaughlin’s Countdown to Tipoff, as he led a ferocious Auburn attack in a 46-point win over Cal State Northridge tonight.

The Tigers blasted CSUN 116-70 behind Doughty’s career high 33 points, and never looked back after opening the game on an 11-0 run. Six total Auburn players scored double figure outputs, and J’Von McCormick posted sixteen assists on the night as the Tigers improved to 4-0 on the young season.

With Ron Artest/Metta World Peace in attendance, Auburn hit 61% of its shots in the first half, including a 91% mark from the free throw stripe. Samir Doughty led the way from the get-go, making 5-7 three pointers before halftime, including one that gave Auburn a 32-9 lead at the under-12 timeout of the first half. Danjel Purifoy and Jamal Johnson each got into the act from long range as well, hitting 2-4 threes apiece.

By the end of the first half, Auburn had opened up a 66-38 lead, with the only real defensive breakdown coming as Terrell Gomez buried his third three of the period to close with 13 points. In the first twenty minutes, the Tigers had gone 10-22 from downtown, with Doughty scored 22 points in the opening frame.

After halftime, the barrage continued, with Auburn shooting 53% for the second half, along with a 7-13 mark from deep and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw stripe. Purifoy, Doughty, and Isaac Okoro each notched double digit outputs after halftime alone, while McCormick dished out another 7 assists. J’Von scored only 2 points on the night while he set the school record for single-game assists.

Auburn set a season-high for points during the young season with 14:57 left in the game as Anfernee Mclemore banged home a three pointer to make the score 85-51. With 8:19 left, a pair of Samir Doughty free throws put the Tigers over the century mark, and Auburn only scored twice over the final five minutes but still finished with 116 points on the night.

Samir Doughty’s huge night led the way for all scorers, but Isaac Okoro finished with 17 points on 8-12 shooting. His efficient and immediate play has been a huge boost for the Tigers after losing the talent they did from last year’s Final Four team. Danjel Purifoy added 16 points, while Devan Cambridge, Anfernee McLemore, and Austin Wiley all notched a round 10 points apiece, with Wiley coming one rebound short of a double-double.

It was a good night to get back into a huge rhythm ahead of Monday night’s game against Colgate, before the Tigers get a week off ahead of the Brooklyn games against New Mexico and either Wisconsin or Richmond.
