Auburn Football Recruiting: Who Could Be The Next Commit?

Auburn’s last commit came a month ago, who might be the next to pull the trigger?

We are 9 weeks from early signing day and the Tigers sit in a strong position heading down the stretch. The Tigers’ 2020 class is ranked #7 overall per 247 Composite with 5-6 spots left to fill. Auburn’s last commit came during the halftime of the Tulane game when Ladarius Tennison decided to hop on board the Gus Bus. There are no set commit dates yet for Auburn’s top remaining targets but quite a few are expected to have a decision by December. Here’s a look at who might be the next name added to Auburn’s 2020 class.

4* TE J.J. Pegues | 6’3” | 260 lbs | Oxford, MS

Top Schools: Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss

Auburn has been the top school for the 4th ranked player in the state of Mississippi since early in the spring but have not yet been able to close the deal. He’s a guy that has been often mentioned as possibly Auburn’s next commit but continues to be patient and use his visits. This has mostly been a Tigers/Rebels battle but if Alabama were to miss on their top TE target, 5* Arik Gilbert, they might turn the heat up on Pegues which would make things interesting. As of now, Auburn continues to be in a good position and a decision could come at any time.

4* CB Brian George | 6’2” | 190 lbs | Belle Glade, FL

Top Teams: Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Miami, Texas A&M

George’s recruitment has been one of the more mysterious ones to date. It doesn’t seem like anyone has a good feel for where he might be trending or when a decision could come. The nation’s #3 JUCO CB was last on the Plains in late July for Auburn’s War Eagle Picnic event and left saying he would soon have a decision. But that never happened. He was supposed to take an official visit to Kentucky a few weeks ago but had to cancel. This past weekend he travelled to College Station on his first official visit of the fall. He’s expected in Lexington at some point still and I wouldn’t be shocked if he was in town for one of Auburn’s big time home games in November.

4* Buck Phillip Webb | 6’4” | 224 lbs | Buford, GA

Top Teams: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, LSU

Auburn’s been on the hunt to land a premier pass rusher ever since Quandarrius Robinson decided to flip to the Tide and Phillip Webb has long been the top name on the list. The Tigers are firmly in this race but this is where their schedule could really hurt them. Webb has already traveled to Tuscaloosa and Baton Rouge this fall but has yet to make it to the Plains to see a game. That will likely change come November but will he still be uncommitted at the time? Probably but it wouldn’t be a shocker if a decision came sooner. Given Auburn’s need for pass rushers and the time spent on this recruitment, Webb is obviously an incredibly important target for the Tigers.

4* CB Kendall Dennis | 6’0” | 174 lbs | Lakeland, FL

Top Teams: Auburn, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee

Dennis, like George, told reporters following his visit to the Plains in late July that a decision would likely come before the season started. But also like George that decision never came. The Tigers want at least one more defensive back in this class and continue to work on the Lakeland standout. However, what does Auburn do if both George and Dennis want on board in December? Is it a first come situation or could the Tigers have space for both? I don’t think it’s clear right now what the answer might be but that’s a situation Auburn would love to be in come December.

4* DL Jay Hardy | 6’4” | 290 lbs | Chattanooga, TN

Top Teams: Auburn, Tennessee

For a long time, Hardy has been considered a heavy Volunteer lean. But a recent trip to the Plains might have shaken things up a bit. The McCallie standout has emerged as one of Auburn’s top defensive line targets and is expected back on campus at least two more times this fall. Could this be another Rodney Garner special? Definitely not out of the realm of possibility though there is still work to be done for it to happen. Hardy is the type of kid though that could make an impact for the Tigers in 2020.

CB Emmanuel Appiah | 6’0” | 175 lbs | Oradell, NJ

Top Teams: Auburn, Rutgers

Appiah is one of the more fascinating prospects this cycle. He’s currently unranked by any recruiting service and his offer list is quite slim but he’s someone the Auburn coaching staff reportedly loves. My guess is if the Tigers were to miss on George, they would really turn the heat up on Appiah later this fall. But considering the impressive 2019 season he’s putting together and the need for immediate impact players in the secondary for 2020, Auburn might try and get both if possible.

4* DE Zykeivous Walker | 6’4” | 260 lbs | Ellaville, GA

Top Teams: Auburn, Georgia, Florida

It would be absolutely shocking if Walker ended up anywhere else over than Georgia. But if there’s one man that can pull that type of stunner it’s Rodney Garner. Walker has been a frequent visitor to the Plains over the past couple of years and will take an official visit the weekend of the Ole Miss game. That will be Auburn’s big chance to show the talented defensive end that he looks best in orange and blue. The Gators lurk as a darhorse as well and given he’s expected to officially visit the Tide as well, you can’t count them out either. But my hunch is this ends up an Auburn/Georgia battle in the end. The Dawgs definitely hold the edge now but a lot can change in 9 weeks.
