25 Days to Tip-Off - Jared Harper

NCAA Basketball: SEC Conference Tournament-South Carolina vs Auburn Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

We’re halfway through the Tip-Off countdown!

As Bon Jovi once sung... “Woah, we’re half-way there!”

It’s hard to believe that we have made it halfway through the 50 day Tip-Off Countdown! 25 down, 25 to go and it’s also our last 27 point game of the last 10 years. We’ve saved the most significant 27 point game of the last 10 years for last and today, its Quarterfinal Friday of this year’s SEC Tournament.

Total Points: 27

Date: March 15, 2019

Opponent: South Carolina (SEC Tournament)

Final Score: Auburn 73 South Carolina 64

Of all the games in the SEC Tournament, THIS was the game I was most nervous about. Auburn had lost a tough one to South Carolina earlier in the year and my fear was what would Chris Silva do against us in this one. While Silva did his part, an Auburn Tiger stood up to the challenge and made sure Auburn’s stay in Nashville was extended to the weekend.

Jared Harper didn’t have his best game in the first game Auburn played in the SEC Tournament but he certainly atoned for that on that Friday afternoon.

Jared was 6-13 from the field, 3-8 from 3-point range and 12-14 from the free throw line. He also had 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Jared made a 3-pointer a minute in to kick off the scoring for Auburn. His next basket, a fast break layup thanks to a steal from Samir Doughty, tied the game at 8 with 13:25 left. Auburn’s offense struggled for a majority of the first half having just 18 points 14 minutes into the game. Auburn trailed 24-18 when the Tigers went on a 8-0 run. The run would be capped off by a 3 from Harper after Bryce Brown stole an inbounds pass and found a wide open Harper on the other side of the court. The Tigers and Gamecocks would go to the locker room tied at 36, with Harper accounting for 8 of Auburn’s 36 1st half points.

In the first three possessions of the 2nd half, each team made a pair of 3-pointers. The last one of those was Harper’s 3rd 3-pointer of the game to tie the game at 42. Harper then went to work in the paint and got to the free throw a lot in the 2nd half.

Auburn’s next basket was a 3-point play converted by Harper. He got a long defensive rebound and went coast to coast for a layup, where he was fouled as well. The made free throw gave Auburn a 45-42 lead.

After a Bryce Brown 3-pointer moments later, Harper would score Auburn’s next 9 points, 7 of those from the free throw line and Auburn led 57-54 with 8 minutes. Harper would then set up Auburn’s next 2 baskets, 3-pointers from Danjel Purifoy and Horace Spencer, to give Auburn a 63-56 lead. Jared would finish his scoring with 4 free throws around the 2:30 mark and then would give a big old “Night, Night” to South Carolina by lobbing a pass to Chuma for a game-sealing jam!

Tomorrow at #24, we kick off the 28 point games by going back to the 2012-2013 season.
