16 Days to Tip-Off - K.T. Harrell

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Today’s Countdown Piece goes back to Bruce Pearl’s 1st SEC Road win as Auburn Head Coach.

Finally, a 28 point performance that results in an Auburn win!

After a week of talking about Auburn games in which the Tigers lost, it’s about time we talk about an Auburn win! Today, we FINALLY get to do that and as we start LSU week, it makes today’s countdown piece appropriate.

When most people remember Auburn beating LSU back in 2015, they think of the thrilling OT win in the SEC Tournament. But it wasn’t the only time Auburn beat LSU in 2015 and K.T. Harrell played a big part in that game as well.

Auburn got a road win in Baton Rouge against a team that would make the NCAA Tournament. In addition to it being the 1st road win of the season and of the Bruce Pearl tenure, Ironically, Auburn is 4-3 in Baton Rouge in Basketball since the start of the 2009-2010 season. Perhaps, Auburn Football could borrow some of that magic and win 1 there in football on Saturday?

Total Points: 28

Date: February 5, 2015

Opponent: at LSU

Final Score: Auburn 81 LSU 77

K.T. was 7-12 from the field, 5-9 from 3-point range, and 9-10 from the free throw line. He started the scoring for Auburn with a 3 in the game’s first minute. He would make a layup 3 12 minutes later to give Auburn a 12-11 lead. Auburn would build a 7 point lead of 26-19 midway through the 1st half which was capped off by 2 free throws from Harrell. After LSU pulled within 3, K.T. connected on his 2nd 3-pointer of the game. 90 seconds later, he would hit his 3rd 3 after a steal, putting Auburn up 34-27. Auburn would go to the locker room up 41-39.

In the 2nd half, K.T. would once again set the tone by opening the 2nd half scoring with his 4th 3 of the night. Harrell would score again from the free throw line making 2 from the line to put Auburn up 48-42 with 17 minutes left. His layup a minute later would put Auburn up 50-44. After leading for most of the game, Auburn would find themselves down 60-58 with 8:31 left. But that wouldn’t last long as K.T. made his 5th and final 3-pointer of the evening putting Auburn back up 61-60 with 8:14 left. A couple empty possessions would ensue before K.T. was true on 2 free throws with 7:23 left. The game would remain close and LSU lead with 1:05 left when Cinmeon Bowers made a layup to put Auburn up 74-73. With 18 seconds left and Auburn up 76-75, Harrell would make 1-2 from the line. LSU would get sent to the line with 12 seconds and would also go 1-2 from the line. Harrell’s scoring would be complete when he hit 2 more free throws with 8 seconds left to put Auburn up 79-76. LSU had a couple chances to tie or win the game but Antoine Mason, who had a big game in his own right, got a steal and hit the game clinching 2 free throws with 1 second left to cap off an 81-77 win for Auburn.

I couldn’t find the highlights for this game but I did find a clip of Bruce talking about the win.

Tomorrow at #15, we go back to the 2017-2018 season once again for a game that started slow for Auburn, but one in which they took over in the 2nd half.
