10 Days to Tip-Off - K.T. Harrell

Montgomery Advertiser

A little something to get you fired up about before Auburn & LSU hit the field this afternoon!

“Auburn’s gonna try and.. get something here. Inbounds to Canada, to Bowers, now to K.T., catch, shoot, 3, GOT IT!!! HE GOT IT!!! AUBURN TIES THE BALLGAME!” -Rod Bramblett

There was no other way to start today’s piece than to recall Rod’s call of the biggest shot of the 2014-2015 season.

It’s the morning of the Auburn-LSU Football game so I thought it would be appropriate (and the timing worked out perfectly in the countdown) to look back at one of the biggest shots from the early Bruce Pearl days at Auburn, against LSU.

Down 64-61 with 5.9 seconds left and down to their last possession of the year, well I’ll let the video show you what happened next.

Total Points: 29

Date: March 13, 2015

Opponent: LSU (SEC Tournament Quarterfinals)

Final Score: Auburn 73 LSU 70 Final/Overtime

Let’s face it. Auburn Basketball fans hadn’t had much to cheer about in many years. This tournament gave Auburn fans hope. Hope that we have obviously seen come to fruition in the past few years. These are the guys that helped lay the foundation and this tournament was a big stepping stone for Auburn, even if it took a few more years for Auburn to see some results.

As for this game, K.T. was 5-11 from the field, 4-7 from 3-point range and 15-18 from the free throw line. Auburn came into this one beginning their 3rd game in 3 days while LSU had sat back and watched nearly every other team take the court in Nashville. LSU scored the first 6 but K.T. hit a 3 to get Auburn on the board. But K.T. got into foul trouble and only played 9 minutes in the 1st half. He had 5 at halftime after making 2 free throws six minutes into the half. LSU led 28-24 at halftime.

K.T. got back into the scoring column 5 minutes into the 2nd half making his 2nd 3 of the game to make it 37-35 LSU with 15 minutes to go. Over the next 4 minutes, K.T. would make a trio of free throws to keep Auburn in the game. LSU would go up when Harrell would hit a jumper with 7:30 to stop a 6-0 LSU run to make it 54-50.

With 2:45 left, and Auburn down 61-53, it looked like Auburn’s run through the SEC Tournament was coming to an end. But K.T. and Auburn weren’t ready to go home yet. Harrell would hit a 3-pointer to make it 61-56 with 2:35 left. Then, Harrell would get fouled behind the 3-point line on back to back possessions making 5 of the 6 free throws which pulled Auburn to within 1 at 62-61 with 57 seconds left. After LSU made 2 free throws with 8 seconds left, take it away K.T....

Auburn would get into Overtime and Harrell would hit 2 free throws to give Auburn its first lead of the day at 66-64. Two more free throws from K.T. and 2 baskets from Antoine Mason would put Auburn up 72-65 with 88 seconds to go in Overtime. LSU had multiple chances to tie in the closing seconds but were unsuccessful as Auburn hung on for a thrilling 73-70 victory which sent them to the SEC Tournament Semifinals.

I moved to Auburn at the beginning of 2015 and for the first time since I had been in Auburn, I can remember Toomer’s Corner being rolled just a bit after that game. Auburn would of course lose the next day to Kentucky but Auburn did themselves very proud those 4 days in Nashville and K.T. Harrell was a huge reason why.

I hope that was some inspiration for you all today as Auburn football prepares to take on LSU.

Tomorrow at #9, we’ll go back to 2010 but as for today, let’s go shock the world! War Eagle!
