Thousands of children grow up every year dreaming of playing football for their favorite college football team. Bo Nix will have the opportunity to do that at Auburn. And the freshman found out today that he will also be the first freshman quarterback to start for the Tigers in 73 years when Travis Tidwell led the nation in total offense in 1946.
From all reports he won the job after a fierce head to head competition with redshirt freshman Joey Gatewood. There were time s during fall camp when observers thought Gatewood would get the nod and there were times when it looked like Nix was the guy.
At 6-5, 233 Joey is the bigger of the two and has a running style teammates compare to Cam Newton. Ultimately it came down to Bo’s pure passing ability. The 2018 Mr Alabama Football threw for over 12,000 yards at Pinson Valley High leading the Indians to back-to-back state titles.
At 6-2, 215 pounds he has also drawn comparisons to another former Tiger signal caller, Jarrett Stidham, who now plays for the New England Patriots. Although he is more of a pocket passer, Nix is fast and has the ability to run the zone-read part of the Malzahn play book just like Stidham did.
The son of a legend at Auburn (Patrick Nix) Bo has waited and trained for this moment all his life. He grew up hearing about legendary plays when his father wore the Orange and Blue and now he has an opportunity to make those same memories for himself.
Every Auburn fan knows who this freshman quarterback is before he takes his first snap in Auburn’s opener against No.13 Oregon. Soon the rest of the nation will know who Bo Nix is as well.
