2019 Depth Chart: Official Edition

So close to Auburn football....

Not long after Auburn’s beat down of the poor Boilermakers, I took a stupid early stab at Auburn’s potential 2019 depth chart. I did the same after signing day and in late July following spring practice. Today, Gus Malzahn released the official version.

• First off, I am not completely surprised by literally everyone being listed as a potential starter at running back. I thought maybe Boobee might be given the distinction of top guy without the OR and everyone else sharing the #2 duties. I have a hard time seeing all six backs touching the ball each week but it will be interesting to see how they are utilized this season. Carnell Williams has reportedly pushed Gus hard to use a true rotation in 2019. We will find out Saturday if that will be the case
• At wide receiver, it looks like Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz are co-starters at the 9 (same spot Darius Slayton played last season) which is interesting. If Schwartz can’t go then Williams will be the guy. If he can, I am guessing Seth will slide back to the 5 where Sal is listed as the current starter. I expect to see a lot of Matthew Hill especially considering the concerns around how healthy Eli Stove might be at kickoff.
• What jumps out on the offensive line is Jalil Irvin locking down the #2 spot at right guard. I was high on Irvin coming out of high school though thought his future was at center. There should be a really good 4 man battle in the interior of Auburn’s OL next season between Tashawn Manning, Nick Brahms, Jalil Irvin and Keiondre Jones.
• Interesting that Moultry was not listed as the sole starter at Buck. I am hoping that means Big Kat has put together an equally (or at least close to it) fall camp as Moultry.
• Awesome to see Tyrone Truesdell earn a starting spot. His spot in Auburn’s class three years ago was far from guaranteed but he patiently waited to see if the Tigers would land Ryan Johnson. When they didn’t he jumped all over the opportunity. The first time Auburn fans saw him he was getting his butt chewed off by Rodney for being lazy during a drill. Now he’s a starter. Cheering for him to have a big season.
• A new designation appears on the defensive depth chart in the form of OLB. Could this be a way to just get Nick Coe listed as a starter since he’s expected to play literally everywhere on the line? Probably but I will be interested to see if there are any looks where Coe is lined up as an outside backer opposite the Buck.
• No surprises at linebacker. Travis Williams has been clear that those four will see the bulk of snaps. My prediction is KJ Britt and Owen Pappoe are the first two linebackers on the field Saturday.
• Not much to mention at secondary besides Nehemiah Pritchett being the only true freshman to make it the two deep. He’s one of the fastest players on this team and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him become a top cover corner for the Tigers in the very near future. A little surprised Zion Puckett is not listed as the 2nd or 3rd team guy at the Star.
• It appears no one has won the punt return job just yet but the 3 man race is down to 2. I would not be surprised to see Auburn give both guys a chance Saturday.
• Love seeing Shaun Shivers on kick return.
• Some interesting names missing from this two deep, most noticeably Marquis McClain. If he was going to make the move you would think it would have been this offseason with Auburn’s top 4 wide receivers being limited.
