17 Days to Kickoff! - LeMarcus Rowell

A cut so deep I had to use a CFL picture! | Ted Jacob/Calgary Herald

As we continue our march to kickoff, we take a look at the top 100 recruits to sign with Auburn of all-time*. The rankings are based on 247’s composite recruit rankings, which unfortunately only date back to 2000.

The Recruit

LeMarcus Rowell remains the 4th highest rated linebacker Auburn has ever signed. He played high school ball at nearby Opelika. At 6-4, 220 lbs, Rowell had prototypical size for a linebacker. He was seen as potentially the next Karlos Dansby.

The Player

After red-shirting in 2001, Rowell saw time as a reserve linebacker behind stars like Dontarrious Thomas and Karlos Dansby. He managed 21 tackles, just 8 solo, and his numbers tailed off towards the end of the season, with his only tackles coming against Louisiana-Monroe and in the Capital One Bowl against Penn State.

Rowell would have been in line to push for playing time with Travis Williams in 2003, but he was arrested on 3 misdemeanor charges: driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, and carrying a concealed pistol without a permit. Tommy Tuberville suspended him indefinitely, and he eventually left the team and resurfaced at Jacksonville State. He would find his way to the CFL for two years with the Calgary Stampeders, hence the headline photo.
