The Tigers secure a very important piece early in their 2021 class.

There was a lot of buzz during Auburn’s “War Eagle Picnic” event that 3* QB Aaron McLaughlin might be closing in on a decision. A lot of that buzz was generated by Auburn offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham’s cryptic tweets that evening hinting at a 2nd commit possibly coming soon. Dillingham then later mentioned a rain delay. Turns out, McLaughlin just needed a few days to shoot a commitment video.

McLaughlin has been a high profile recruit for awhile now. He started receiving offers in the 8th grade and has been a frequent attendee to the plethora of recruiting camps around the country. As a rising junior he holds offers from 30+ schools including Alabama, Michigan, and USC. He impressed the Tigers at a camp earlier in the spring but it was his performance this past Friday that apparently finalized things for both sides. This is a big early boom for the 2021 class.

Highlights

Scouting Report

From a tools perspective, McLaughlin is the complete package. At 6’4” 225 lbs, he’s got the large frame colleges desire in their gunslingers. He’s also got the arm. McLaughlin has one of the strongest arms in the 2021 class with the ability to put the ball just about anywhere he pleases. While not necessarily fleet of foot, he does have enough mobility to keep plays alive and find a man downfield. His HS teammate and current Auburn 2020 commitment Ze’Vian Capers told AuburnUndercover McLaughlin clocked a 4.60 40 time Friday.

For McLaughlin it’s about taking these incredible tools and finding away to consistently apply them on Friday nights. For the past two seasons he’s played at powerhouse Buford who tends to deploy a more ground based attack. He now attends Denmark High School who is expected to spread things out a bit more. This fall could be a very good chance for him to take the next step and go from camp warrior to dominant Friday night starter. If that happens, he’s got a chance to be a top 100 player in the 2021 class.

The Class

It’s early but Auburn is off to a very good start in the 2021 class. Armoni Goodwin and Aaron McLaughlin are fantastic foundational pieces to the offensive side of that class. Don’t be surprised if the Tigers soon get an equally impressive defensive piece in 5* DT Lee Hunter too. If Gus Malzahn can put together a strong showing this fall, Auburn’s 2021 class could be a pretty durn good one.
