As we continue our march to kickoff, we take a look at the top 100 recruits to sign with Auburn of all-time*. The rankings are based on 247’s composite recruit rankings, which unfortunately only date back to 2000.
THE RECRUIT
JaQuay Savage (then Williams), originally out of Sandy Springs High School, committed to Auburn in the summer before his senior year. He seemed to be, *ahem* impressed, with receivers coach Trooper Taylor.
“Auburn has one of the best wide receiver coaches in the country,” Williams told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. ”It’s a great tradition down there, and I like the offense. They’ve really been on a hot streak with recruiting.”
Knowing what we know about Taylor’s recruiting strategies, it’s not hard to read between the lines. Still, Auburn was in need of top-end talent at wide receiver, and Savage was one of the best in the country in the 2012 class.
Well, Savage never made it to Auburn. Instead, he didn’t qualify due to grades, and ended up attending Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia.
Savage committed to the Tigers again in September, with a slightly lower overall rating but as one of the top JUCO transfers in the country. However, after the Tigers nightmare of 2012 (I feel like I have to say this every article), Savage decommitted from Auburn, and signed with Texas A&M soon after.
THE PLAYER
Savage played minimally in 2013 as a true freshman, picking up four receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown. All of his catches were in garbage time against inferior foes, but Savage was likely going to be counted on to help replace Mike Evans in 2014.
Unfortunately for the Aggies, Savage left for Louisville after the 2013 season. After sitting out in 2014, Savage started six games in 2015 for Bobby P’s Cardinals, including picking up a catch for two yards against the totally-accurately ranked #6 Auburn Tigers. Injuries nagged him in 2016 and prevented him from playing, and after graduating from Louisville, Savage transferred again, this time to Cincinnati.
In 2017, six years after he had originally committed to Auburn, Savage played his final season of college football. Playing for the Bearcats, he recorded a grand total of 6 catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.
For those counting at home... this one’s another bust.
