TWO-A-DAYS: Belated 83 Days to Kickoff! - Smoke Monday

A four star recruit but a five star name.

THE RECRUIT

Smoke Monday was a two-way player at Carver High School, playing WR and safety. Many recruiting services listed him as an athlete, though it was generally accepted he was going to play defense. Monday, another UA All-American, committed to Auburn on July 11th of 2017, and according to our own AUNerd, he was the top guy on our board at the position.

Monday has all the tools to be an elite safety at the next level. He’s long, physical and has great speed. Whether it’s delivering a blow to a crossing WR, playing in the box to help stuff the run or making a play on a ball in the air, this kid can do it all. He probably needs to put some more weight on that 6’3” frame but this is a kid that can come in and compete for a starting spot immediately.

Monday chose Auburn mainly over Clemson, but as a highly touted Atlanta kid, he had offers from UGA, FSU, and Florida as well.

THE PLAYER

Monday saw the field early as a true freshman. In his first few games, he was used mostly as a role piece - pass rusher from the secondary. Monday picked up a game-sealing sack in the opener vs Washington, and another in game four against Arkansas.

The true freshman picked up his first career start against Ole Miss in a cathartic win after the Tennessee loss. Monday also had an interception, and blocked a punt in the Iron Bowl.

Monday was a part of a signing class in 2018 that produced a ton right away. Along with offensive guys like Shivers, Schwartz, and Williams, Monday gave Auburn fans reason to get excited about the future of the program. While he’ll likely be behind Jeremiah Dinson and Daniel Thomas again this fall, he’ll be the first guy to rotate in at safety.
