Softball Begins NCAA Tournament Play

It’s not pronounced Tuck-son.

Auburn softball is back in the NCAA Tournament, only they’re headed out west to take on the field at the Tucson Regional. Play begins tonight as the 2-seed Tigers meet 3-seed Colorado State on ESPN at 8 pm CST.

The Tigers are coming off of a good run at the SEC Tournament, where they were able to score two victories to advance to the tournament semifinals. Auburn took down Missouri and 2-seed Tennessee before falling to eventual champ Florida in the semis last week. It was announced shortly thereafter that Mickey Dean’s team would be taking a trip to Arizona for regional action.

In the Tucson Regional, the Arizona Wildcats are the top seed after they finished the regular season at 42-12, including a series win over #3 UCLA to end the year. The Wildcats will face 4-seed Harvard to open the regional.

Last season, Auburn fell to Florida State in Tallahassee as the Seminoles went all the way to the Women’s College World Series title. The previous two seasons, the Tigers were eliminated by Oklahoma — in the Super Regionals in 2017 and the WCWS Championship Game in 2016. This year will be Auburn’s sixth-straight appearance in the NCAA Softbtall Tournament, which ties the longest streak in school history.

If Auburn advances out of the Tucson Regional, they’ll play the winner of the Oxford Regional, where fellow SEC team Ole Miss got the 11th overall seed in the Tournament. War Eagle!
