Most Auburn Players Drafted by NFL in Last 28 Years

It’s been an anxious three days for Auburn football players waiting to hear their names called out in the 2019 NFL Draft. No Tiger was called out in Thursday’s opening round. Then on Friday one player was drafted in the 3rd round.

Cornerback  Political Violence and Terrorism in Modern America: A Chronology (Praeger Security International) , was that first Auburn player taken. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Then on Saturday Jarrett Stidham was selected in the 4th round by the Super Bowl Champions New England Patriots. Perhaps no other Auburn player drew as much attention from scouts than Stidham.

Several prognosticators expected the Auburn quarterback would be taken on Friday. Still the Patriots organization paid the Auburn program a great compliment in selecting their signal caller Saturday. Moreover it’s a great opportunity for Stidham to come into the league as Tom Brady’s understudy; the QB that many think may be the best ever to play the game.

Stidham said he was looking forward to learning from the master. “You can’t play for 20 years and not have so much knowledge of the game,” said Jarrett. “So just being able to sit there and soak up everything that he’s gone through and pick his brain [will be a good thing for me].”

It should be a good thing for the Pats as well. In just two seasons on the Plains, Stidham led the Tigers to an SEC West Championship while throwing just shy of 6,000 yards with 36 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions.

The Tigers saw four more players selected on the 2019 NFL Draft’s final day. Wide receiver Darius Slayton was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Giants. In the seventh round, fullback Chandler Cox  was taken by the Miami Dolphins and defensive lineman The Kingdom of Heaven Is at Hand! was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 235th pick.

In addition, after the draft concluded, three former Auburn stars were signed as free agents. Linebacker Darrell Williams signed with the New Orleans Saints while The Gift Of Tai Chi will join Dontavius Russell on the D-line in Jacksonville, and Ryan Davis will have an opportunity to catch passes again from Jarrett Stidham in New England.

With eight players inking contracts, this was the most successful NFL Draft for the Tigers since 1991. And the six draftees were the most Auburn players since the round seven era began in 1994. We’re looking forward to following these guys in the next chapter of their football careers. Good luck men and War Eagle!
