Auburn Hires New Offensive Coordinator

Who is it?

After a really bizarre week during which nearly everyone from Hugh Freeze to Bobby Bentley to Bigfoot were rumored to be a part of the search for an offensive coordinator, Auburn has made a hire and will bring Memphis’ Kenny Dillingham to the Plains.

Dillingham comes to Auburn after working under Mike Norvell at Memphis, and will assume the role of quarterbacks coach in addition to his coordinator duties. Gus Malzahn will retain play-calling responsibilities during games, but Dillingham will bring experience working in a situation like that, since Norvell called plays at Memphis.

This past season, the Memphis Tigers ranked 7th in the country in scoring (43.6 ppg), 3rd in the country in rushing offense (285 ypg), and 4th overall in total yards (534 ypg). Dillingham helped Memphis produce prolific offenses in his three seasons on the staff, and should surely help Auburn get back on track.

Other staff changes include Kodi Burns adding passing game coordinator duties to his task list, and like we said above, Gus will call the plays. Now there won’t be any doubt about who’s making the in-game decisions, and we can blame all plays — good and bad — on the head coach.

Either way, Dillingham is a guy who’s had success in his first couple of seasons at the college level, and the Memphis offense has a ton of similarities to what Auburn likes to do. The concepts shouldn’t take long to mesh together, and the offensive staff should have plenty of cohesion once the work begins.

We’ll have more later in the week as we look ahead to what Dillingham brings to the table in terms of schemes, but it’s nice to finally have this piece of the puzzle in place. Now let’s make something happen. War Eagle.
