GAME RECAP: Auburn 99, Saint Peter’s 49

Walk-ons play, everyone slays.

In each of the first three games played at Auburn Arena before the holiday, the walk-ons got extended time down the stretch.

It was no different tonight as the Tigers blew away Saint Peter’s 99-49 to improve to 6-1 on the season. Anfernee McLemore and Bryce Brown each scored 19 points, and Auburn hit 15 threes overall as they easily dispatched the Peacocks at home.

Auburn led 10-0 almost immediately out of the gate, and opened up a 24-7 lead at the midpoint of the first half thanks to some early hot shooting on the perimeter by Malik Dunbar, who hit a pair of threes in the first half. That was the last time the margin was less than 20 points, as the Tigers ballooned that advantage to 32 points on a Jared Harper three with 3:46 to go before the half, and Dunbar’s third three of the first half made it 51-23 at the break.

After the half, Auburn didn’t take any breaks, as McLemore buried two threes in the opening minutes, and a long ball by Chuma Okeke made it a 40-point game with 15:24 to go. The Tigers cruised from there and hit a 50-point lead on two Dunbar foul shots in the final five minutes, before Bruce Pearl put the walk-ons in for the closing moments. Chase Maasdorp swished a long straightaway three and Preston Cook flushed a dunk on a breakaway to seal the 99-49 win.

The Tigers shot 48% from both the floor (36-75) and from three (15-31), while forcing 26 turnovers (scoring 38 points off of those turnovers), dominated with 41 bench points and 16 steals.

Austin Wiley (16 points), Malik Dunbar (14 points), and Chuma Okeke (12 points) were the other double-digit scorers for the Tigers, while Davauhnte Turner led Saint Peter’s with 12 points. Up next for Auburn, it’s a visit from UNC Asheville on Tuesday with tipoff set for 7 pm CST at Auburn Arena.
