GAME RECAP: Auburn 103, Mississippi College 52

The Tigers pass their final test before Maui.

That was easy.

Auburn got up big early, led by 19 at halftime, let the Choctaws make it a little nervous, and then rattled off a 36-0 run to blow the doors off and win going away 103-52.

The Tigers built enough of a lead in the first half to let off the gas a bit, knowing that they were too much for Division II Mississippi College at Auburn Arena. With the victory, Auburn improves to 3-0 and sets the stage for the trip out to Hawaii and the Maui Invitational.

In the first half, Auburn opened up a 16-0 lead before the Choctaws scratched the scoreboard. Austin Wiley had six of those points and looked much better than he did in his debut against Washington. In the first half alone, Wiley was the only player in double figures with 11 points and 5 rebounds. He ended up leading all scorers with 18 points and 7 boards, but he was great at the foul line, going 8-10 overall.

Auburn led 48-29 at the break, despite hitting just 4-18 threes and shooting 40% from the floor. The Tigers were much more effective on the boards with 32 rebounds at halftime, and 66 for the game.

Mississippi College did cut the margin to just 11 points on an early 9-0 run, but the Tigers quickly regained control and went on a 17-5 run to lead 68-45 at the 13:15 mark. From here, Auburn ran off 35 straight points to completely close the door before a Choctaw free throw stopped the bleeding. When it was all said and done, Auburn led 103-46 and cruised in the final few minutes to a 103-52 victory.

While Wiley led Auburn in scoring with 18 points, Horace Spencer was the game’s most explosive player with 14 points and 17 rebounds in only 19 minutes of play. Bryce Brown (16 points), Samir Doughty (13 points), Jared Harper (12 points), and Malik Dunbar (10 points) all finished with double digits in the win, and Bruce Pearl was once again able to play 16 players in the win.

Auburn will head out to Maui for the first game at the Maui Invitational against Xavier on Monday. Tipoff for the Tigers and Musketeers will come at 1:30 PM CST (9:30 AM Hawaiian Standard Time). Xavier fell last night to Wisconsin 77-68 at home.
