About Last Night: Auburn 99, Saint Peter’s 49

These Tigers are going to be tough to beat at home.

Auburn beat Saint Peter’s by 50 last night. Let’s repeat that... your Auburn Tigers beat a Division 1 team by 50 points last night.

I know, their conference is rated as one of the worst in the land, and they had just one win coming in, but a 50-point win over anybody is good.

Rod’s most excited call of the night rightfully came at the end when Preston Cook read a pass, stole it, and stuffed it on the other end. Other than that, it was a very easy victory that got Auburn to 6-1 and sets them up for a date with UNC-Asheville on Tuesday night at home.

There’s not much to say after this one, honestly. Auburn beat a bad team at home, and looked good doing it. There was never any doubt about the Tigers’ ability to run the Peacocks out of the gym, and they opened up a 10-0 lead by the first break of the game and it was never a single-digit game after that.

I do want to talk about what Auburn’s done at home through the first portion of the season, though. Look at these runs to start the home games:

• vs South Alabama - 17-4 Auburn at the first media timeout
• vs Washington - 14-4 Auburn at the first media timeout
• vs Mississippi College - 10-0 Auburn at the first media timeout
• vs Saint Peter’s - 10-0 Auburn at the first media timeout

So the team has gotten a hot start at home every time. That’s nice to see since we’ll have home games with Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi State, and Tennessee in SEC play.

Something else that’s been fantastic in all but one home game is the three-point shooting. Here are the numbers for that category:

• vs South Alabama - 18-38 (47.4%)
• vs Washington - 12-31 (38.7%)
• vs Mississippi College - 8-33 (24.2%)
• vs Saint Peter’s - 15-31 (48.4%)

If Auburn continues to average about 40% from three, they’re going to be tough to beat inside Auburn Arena. With Bryce Brown, Jared Harper, and now Anfernee McLemore finding their shots at home from deep, it’s going to be a three-point barrage for whoever visits. Add in Malik Dunbar off the bench with what he’s done lately (four double-digit scoring efforts in relief), as well as an improving Austin Wiley, and this team continues to get better and better.

Oh, yeah, Danjel only has two more games before he’s back as well. UNC-Asheville and Dayton are next week, and then Danjel Purifoy gets to show UAB what the rest of the college basketball world has been missing for over a year.
