How could a team be picked to finish second in the toughest division in college football and not have any first team players on the preseason All-SEC list? That’s where the media placed Auburn at the end of SEC Media Days.
It’s understandable that Alabama, chosen to finish first, would have a good number selected, but there still should have been at least one player from Auburn. It’s not the first time Auburn has been underrated, and at season’s end I expect the Tigers to be well represented, especially if they win the conference.
Road games in Athens and Tuscaloosa will make the Tigers’ chances for a league or divisional championship difficult but … not impossible. Auburn has one of the most talented rosters in years and could be near the top of the league heading into Amen Corner.
Some of that talent was highlighted by the media as the Tigers had ten players placed on one of the preseason teams. Auburn’s second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham was named to the second team offense along with wide receiver Ryan Davis. On the defensive side of the ball, D-lineman Derrick Brown, linebacker Deshaun Davis and cornerback Jamel Dean were second-team All-SEC pre-season picks.
Offensive guard Marquel Harrell, defensive tackle Dontavius Russell, defensive end Marlon Davidson, cornerback Javaris Davis, and offensive guard Marque Harrell were all third-team selections.
With what some believe to be one of the best defensive lines in the league and an experienced 3,000 yard passer returning to run the offense, I expect the Tigers to be a contender in 2018 for the league title.
Besides, I don’t put too much stock in the media picking Alabama to win it all. For one thing the media has only got it right six times in the last 26 years. And for another … that’s why they play the games.
