Auburn needed a warmup before SEC play. Auburn got said warm-up against Mercer, and decided to blow it off. Thank the SEC gods that Missouri proved to be a second chance to make a first impression.
I mentioned last week how dumb it was to run our best running back who was not 100% 34 times against an FCS opponent. The fruits of being dumb? Said running back has to sit against Missouri. Now, fortunately our other good running back came back from injury to score five touchdowns. Kerryon is nowhere nowhere near 100%, but thanks to a couple of home run balls by Jarrett Stidham, Kerryon didn’t have to shoulder a big load. I would argue that these injuries also helped Gus remember that an offense is still allowed to attack the edge. Eli Stove and Kam Martin did just that in this one, and both deserve more touches against Mississippi State.
Auburn’s defense continues to dominate opposing offenses. Auburn’s defensive line is so nasty, and the defensive backs fly to the football on run and short pass plays. Tray Matthews was especially impressive Saturday night. I love how he runs to the football.
Auburn stands at 1-0 in the conference with two big home games upcoming against the Mississippies. If the Tigers can match the level they had against Missou, then they should be in good shape for a tough road stretch.
The Basketball Scandal
I wanted to take a second to address the big ole can of worms that has spilled into the Auburn basketball program.
First of all, Chuck Person is a legend of Auburn basketball, and he is loved, especially among those of us who grew up in South Alabama. I won’t go into the details of what he is accused of, but if it is all true, then my best guess is the NCAA will be lurking around the basketball program pretty soon. Will the justice department turn over evidence to the NCAA? Will the NCAA have the stomach to investigate when several other (and one perennial power in Arizona) have coaches who are also involved. Time will tell, I suppose, but it looks bad on the surface.
Which brings me to my next point: How many black eyes on our athletic program have to happen before Jay Jacobs is shown the door. Forget about the heartburn we all feel over the rest of our football season for a second. Jay Jacobs hired Sunny Galloway, who was a train wreck in baseball. He hired Myers, who hired his son, who allegedly had a relationship with a player which caused Myers and sons to have to depart. Now, we have Chuck Person, who is under federal frickin’ indictment.
Jacobs needs to be shown the door yesterday, in my opinion. Under his watch, Auburn has endured one embarrassment after another, on the filed and off.
