Tigers Season Comes to an End But Future is Bright for Auburn Baseball

The 2017 Auburn Baseball team surprised a lot of people. Picked in the preseason to finish last in the SEC West, the Tigers played most of the season at the top of the league until injuries slowed down their momentum.

Even so, Auburn earned a berth in the Tallahassee Regional. And it looked like for awhile the Tigers might be playing in their first Super Regional in 18 years. That dream ended tonight with a 6-0 defeat by Florida State.

After beating University of South Florida, and Tennessee Tech, the Tigers had a couple of opportunities to win the region championship Saturday night in the ninth and tenth innings. However, cruel fate and a field umpire’s bad call on a double play intervened to prevent that from happening.

That loss put the Tigers in a precarious position. Auburn’s best chance to make it to the next level was to win it in three games. With Cole Lipscomb, Keegan Thompson, and Casey Mize unable to pitch, the Tiger bats had to produce. That didn’t happen, as Auburn was baffled by the junk throwing Will Zirzow, and the season ended in Tallahassee at Dick Howser Stadium.

Nevertheless it was a successful year for  a team that many thought before the season would struggle to finish above .500. The prognosticators saw a young team but failed to see how a young head coach could get his boys to believe. After such a disappointing loss, the team is hurting tonight but the future is bright because Auburn Baseball is in good hands with Butch Thompson.
